Indian batter Chinmay Sutar has continued his remarkable start to first-class cricket, adding another historic achievement to an already extraordinary debut season.

The Mizoram batter has been rewriting record books since making his debut in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. After producing a series of massive scores, Sutar entered his latest fixture against Arunachal Pradesh with another milestone within reach.

Chinmay Sutar surpasses Bill Ponsford's 123-year-old world record

Chinmay Sutar has broken the world record for the most runs scored by a batter in their first five innings in first-class cricket. Representing Mizoram against Arunachal Pradesh in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy Plate Group, Sutar reached the milestone with an unbeaten 89 at the time of the record being broken.

The knock took his cumulative tally to 748 runs from his first five innings, taking him past the previous record of 724 runs held by Australia great Bill Ponsford. Ponsford had established the mark between 1921 and 1923, and it had remained untouched for 123 years.

In another finding, the all-time record for the most runs scored after six innings from a first-class debut currently belongs to Bashir Shah, who accumulated 831 runs. Sutar will need another 83 runs in his next innings to move past that mark.

Who is Chinmay Sutar? The Mizoram batter who made history with a 400

Chinmay Sutar's rise to the headlines began with his move to Mizoram ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season. Originally associated with the Mumbai Cricket Association, the batter had not made his first-class debut for Mumbai despite representing his home state in two List A matches, one in 2019 and another in 2026.

His first-class introduction came against Manipur, where he scored 35 and 99 in his first two innings. However, it was his next appearance against Nagaland that transformed him into a national talking point. Sutar smashed an unbeaten 400, becoming only the second Indian batter to score a quadruple century in first-class cricket.

Quadruple ton breaks multiple records

He also became the first player to register a quadruple century as his maiden hundred in the format. He carried that form into the fixture against Meghalaya, scoring 125 and helping Mizoram secure a first-innings lead despite their opponents posting 562 runs.

Sutar's 400 was also notable for its share of the team's total. His 68.85% contribution to Mizoram's 581/9 declared remains the highest percentage of a team total among the 12 quadruple centuries recorded in first-class cricket, including one quintuple century.

Mizoram's total was also the lowest team score to feature a quadruple hundred, surpassing the previous benchmark of Worcestershire's 628/7 declared, which included Graeme Hick's unbeaten 405.
