There was a time when Abhishek Sharma was a reliable opener for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. He had the world in the palm of his hands, and every shot that he played went for a maximum. However, since the start of the T20 World Cup, things have changed for the maverick Indian opener.
He no longer possesses the same aura he had before the World Cup, and bowlers have found multiple ways to counter his aggressive style of batting in T20s. Even in the IPL 2026, Abhishek has blown hot and cold, and that has not helped SRH’s cause.

After his scintillating performance against the Punjab Kings, SRH fans had high expectations from Abhishek as the franchise took on the Rajasthan Royals in the Monday evening clash. However, disaster struck in the very first over of the SRH batting.
Jofra Archer bowled the first over for RR, and on the first ball of the innings, Abhishek danced down the track and miscued his attempted slog. The ball went straight to Ravi Bishnoi at deep third as the southpaw was dismissed for a golden duck.
With yet another score of 0, Abhishek created an unfortunate record as he surpassed Rohit Sharma in the “duck feat.” He became the Indian T20 opener with the most ducks in a calendar year.
The left-handed opener has 7 scores of duck in T20s this year, while Rohit Sharma and even Sanju Samson had 6 each in 2018 and 2024, respectively.

There is nothing wrong with Abhishek Sharma’s technique, and moreover, T20 cricket is more about hitting, rather than thinking about technical aspects. The opposition team has found ways to dismiss him, with the captains often placing the fielders near the deep cover or the deep third man area.
The SRH opener has the tendency to step down the track and go for the big shot, but in the process, he often gets the top-edge, and with fielders already placed at deep third or deep cover, Abhishek usually gets dismissed.
Perhaps the 25-year-old can find different ways to tackle the bowlers, who already have a plan ready for him. Maybe stepping down the wicket is not the best idea, and he needs to think of a different idea to counter the bowlers.
