Ashton Turner reacts to PSL pitch [Source: AFP]
In a top-of-the-table battle in PSL 2026, the Multan Sultans locked horns with the Peshawar Zalmi at the National Stadium, Karachi, to claim the number 1 spot on the points table.
While the focus remained on the electrifying clash between the best teams in the tournament, the Multan Sultans skipper, Ashton Turner, grabbed headlines early on the evening. As the toss commenced, Turner put Zalmi in to bat and went on to make a joke about the conditions at the venue, putting Mohsin Naqvi’s PSL in an embarrassing situation.
Having finished at the bottom of the points table last season, the Multan Sultans are looking to make a statement by crushing the league leaders and strengthening their bid for the playoff spots. Leading up to the game, Ashton Turner has led the team to four wins in five games in PSL 2026, giving his words at the toss a lot more significance.
Ashton Turner mocks PSL 2026 pitch conditions
Ahead of the fixture in Karachi, Ashton Turner’s Multan Sultans had played all five of their matches at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Hence, the clash against the Zalmi brought new challenges for them, to get used to the conditions and go on with the rest of the tournament.
According to Turner, who has won multiple BBL titles, he was misled by people around him about the pitch on offer in Karachi. He looked shocked at the contrast between what he was told and what the pitch actually looked like, and duly noted it at the toss.
"I've been told this is an Australian pitch, but I have never seen an Australian pitch look like this before, so yeah, just want to see what it plays like,” he said upon winning the toss.

Zalmi stamps authority over the Sultans early on
After being put in to bat by Turner, who wanted to learn a bit about the conditions in the first innings, the explosive Mohammad Haris went hammer and tongs to give his team a swashbuckling start to the match and scored 40 off 17 and stitched a 50-run opening partnership in just 4.3 overs.
At the end of the powerplay, with the in-form Kusal Mendis (7*) and Babar Azam (14*) batting, Zalmi are 61/1. Peter Siddle has picked the solitary wicket of the night so far.

Multan Sultans’ high-flying start to PSL 2026
In PSL 2025, the Multan Sultans, under Mohammad Rizwan, had an incredibly poor season, as they finished at the bottom of the table. They had won only one of their 10 matches and ended the season with a record-low of 2 points. The poor season led to Rizwan’s release from the franchise, and they decided on a squad overhaul.
After signing the proven franchise league performer and multiple BBL winning captain, Ashton Turner, they built a squad around him and also included several other Australians, including Steve Smith.
Since the start of PSL 2026, Sahibzada Farhan has scored 232 runs in 5 innings, including a century as the second-highest run-scorer of the competition. Turner himself has provided crucial finishing touches, with 129 runs in 5 innings at an average of 129 and a strike rate of 189.70. The bowlers have shared the burden of the wickets among themselves as well.
With four wins in five games, the Sultans are well-poised to finish in the playoff spots as they look to win their second PSL trophy.
