In a historic turn of events, Ireland beat India for the very first time in a T20I as they won the first game by 34 runs. However, fans in India were shocked and turned against captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

The match started with India opting to bowl first. Despite initial setbacks, Ireland posted 182 runs on the board after Lorcan Tucker’s half-century. In the second innings, however, the men in blue lost the plot.

India lost its first-ever T20I to Ireland

Opener Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan departed on single-digit scores, but Abhishek Sharma kept the scoreboard ticking with a half-century of 20 balls.

But he failed to find support from the other end. Shreyas Iyer had a terrible outing as he was dismissed on 3 runs. Shivam Dube fought with 25 off 14 balls, but Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Tilak Varma walked back on 15, 9 and 19 runs, respectively.

For Ireland, debutants Jai Moondra and Matthew Hollard were on fire. Moondra picked up 2 wickets while Hollard collected a 3-wicket-haul. Matthew Humphreys also took 3 wickets.

This marked Ireland’s first-ever international victory against India. The feat is also special because Ireland were battling with a severe injury crisis, and many senior players had to miss out.

Still, the youngsters stepped up and beat a World Champion team, marking a historic day in their cricket history.

Fans lash out after historic defeat

Meanwhile, fans in India were extremely disappointed with the defeat. They slammed captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir on social media.

The anger stemmed from the fact that India lost to a much weaker team. Not only that, the fact that 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was denied a debut also angered a lot of supporters. 

They felt that if the kid had played, he would have supported Abhishek Sharma, and India could have accomplished the chase.

Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy era begins on a sour note

Meanwhile, fans were also irked with captain Shreyas Iyer. In his debut T20I as a skipper, India landed on the wrong side of history by losing to Ireland for the first time ever.

Iyer replaced World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav as captain in this series and was expected to do better since he has been a successful leader in the IPL.

However, international cricket tested his tactical acumen, and he massively lacked it in the first T20I. Also, the trend of losing winning streaks under Gautam Gambhir’s coaching era continues, and fans are completely against it.

They believe Gambhir’s approach is flawed and India are heading down the wrong path. Meanwhile, Ireland have grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 2-game series. The second T20I will now be held on June 28 at Belfast.
