On June 26, India took on Ireland in the first T20I of the 2-game series at Belfast. However, the much-hyped debut of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi didn’t happen as he was left out of the playing XI.

Sooryavanshi had a stellar IPL 2026 season where he scored nearly 800 runs at a strike rate of above 200. He scored a century and multiple 90+ scores to guide the Rajasthan Royals to the playoffs.

Owing to his brilliance in the IPL, Vaibhav received his maiden national call-up for the T20I series vs Ireland.

When Gautam Gambhir took a stand against star culture

However, despite much hype, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi didn’t receive his debut cap in the first T20I as India opted for an experienced lineup.

Naturally, the fans were disappointed, and this incident brought back the old memories of head coach Gautam Gambhir. Back in 2025, when India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin retired from Tests.

It was widely speculated that Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar had pushed the seniors out, as he was apparently against the star culture in the Indian cricket team.

Star culture refers to the belief that established names like Rohit and Virat received more opportunities and influence because of their past achievements and bigger brand names.

But Gautam Gambhir reportedly wanted a ‘team first’ approach and hence initiated a transition where Shubman Gill, at just 25, was appointed as the Test captain.

Did Gambhir play a role in Sooryavanshi’s snub?

That being said, Gautam Gambhir has always been vocal about his resentment towards star culture in Team India. Hence, his first task as head coach was to reverse that approach.

Now, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is just 15 years old with negligible experience in domestic cricket. He did perform exceptionally well in the last couple of seasons in the IPL and has been consistent in age-group cricket as well.

However, as for international cricket, handing him his debut cap would have sent a message that Vaibhav was selected largely because of the social media hype. Hence, Gautam Gambhir could have played a role in his snub to protect his stand against star culture.

But nothing is confirmed. Captain Shreyas Iyer said that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is an extraordinary talent, and he will get his opportunity very soon.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi still has a long way to go

Having said that, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s journey has just begun. The T20I series against Ireland is not his final destination, as the 15-year-old has been selected for the 5-game T20I series against England as well.

That tour will kick off in July, and Vaibhav is expected to get an opportunity there. From now on, he is likely to be a part of India’s T20I set-up and may travel for a couple more series, including the Asian Games 2026.

Hence, a debut is not far for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He just has to wait patiently for his turn and ensure the opportunities do not go to waste.
