Fans troll Shreyas Iyer [Source: screengrab]
Shreyas Iyer made his captaincy debut for Team India in the first T20I of their two-match ongoing away series against Ireland. While the charismatic skipper started off well with some astute bowling changes, the hosts recovered well and conjured a competitive total after batting first in Belfast.
Left to chase down 183 runs for a 1-0 lead in the series, Shreyas also failed to make the most with the bat, falling for just three runs from seven balls on his return to format after a gap of more than two-and-a-half years.
Needless to say, Iyer’s flop show with the bat on captaincy debut and in his T20I return sparked a wave of criticism from Indian fans on social media.
Shreyas Iyer draws fans ire after flop T20I return
Shreyas Iyer was selected in Team India squad for the series in Ireland and England after a gap of more than two-and-a-half years, considering the senior batter played the last of his 51 T20Is for India way back in December 2023.
Moreover, the cricketer was also appointed as new Indian captain, replacing T20 World Cup winning leader Suryakumar Yadav owing to the latter’s sudden dip in form.
As it turned out, Iyer failed to make the most of his opportunity in his first return game, scoring just three from seven balls before finding George Dockrell off Matt Hollard in the final over of the powerplay.
Several Indian cricket fans took to X and lashed out at the 31-year-old for his irresponsible shot in a tall chase amid tumbling wickets against Ireland. Here is a look at some of the fans expressing their reactions on the microblogging site.
Shreyas Iyer named new Indian T20I captain
A few weeks ago, the BCCI appointed Shreyas Iyer as new national T20I captain as a replacement for Suryakumar Yadav. The 31-year-old will likely oversee Team India up until the 2028 T20 World Cup, if not beyond.
Ushering in a new era for India in the shortest form of the game, the cricketer is currently on a European tour with his colleagues. For his initial assignments, Iyer will lead the team for a two-match series in Ireland, before flying to England for a fresh five-match challenge next month.
India stumble in chase of 183
Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana picked up the early wickets to floor Ireland’s top-order at 51-4. However, captain Lorcan Tucker counterattacked for the hosts to blaze them to a competitive 182-9 from 20 overs.
In response, Abhishek Sharma got India off to a flier in the run chase with an explosive 20-ball half-century. In spite of Sharma’s early blitz, India lost three wickets inside the powerplay, with Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer all falling for single digit scores.
At the time of publishing, India reached 111-6 in 13 overs.
