It is very unusual for a spinner to overstep and bowl a no-ball. The rarity becomes even more staggering when it occurs six times in a single day of a Test match.

That unusual sequence unfolded during Noman Ali’s spell against Bangladesh on Day 1 of Pakistan’s away series-opener at the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Noman’s unusual spell inevitably triggered murmurs and speculation among sections of fans, with some even bringing up fixing allegations on social media.

Fans Allege ‘Match Fixing’ After Noman Ali’s No-Ball Sequence

Pakistan took on hosts Bangladesh in the first Test of their two-match away series from Friday, May 8 onwards in Mirpur. Bangladesh made the most of the batting friendly conditions on offer by mounting over 300 runs within the opening day itself.

One of the two specialist spinners in the playing XI, Noman Ali was tasked to bowl 20 overs in the day after the opening spells of express pacemen Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Abbas.

As it turned out, the 39-year-old leaked runs at four-an-over throughout the day, at the benefit of just one wicket of a well-set Mominul Haque at 91.

Noman Ali even bowled as many as six no-balls on the opening day, which is highly unusual for a spinner in the longest format of the game.

Moreover, the sixth of those no-balls was originally intended to be a review from Pakistan captain Shan Masood, only for the third umpire to intervene after spotting Noman overstepping the crease.

His repeated misdemeanors prompted a legion of cricket fans to question the bizarre sequence online, with several users even hinting at possible foul play. Here is a look at some of the fans reacting to Noman Ali’s unusual no-ball streak.
