Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), on May 26, 2026, celebrated two years of them winning the IPL 2024 tournament. It was on this day when KKR ended their 10-year wait to win their third Indian Premier League title, under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer.
KKR had defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final, which was held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, by 8 wickets in a dominating fashion. SRH had come into the finals like a juggernaut, and KKR played amazingly well to stop them from winning the title.

The final of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) was played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Sunrisers Hyderabad came into the final as favorites given their dominating season beforehand.
However, Shreyas Iyer and co. had a plan for them, and the KKR bowlers came to party as Mitchell Starc started the rout by clean bowling Abhishek Sharma for 2 runs with a peach of a delivery.
SRH was dismissed for 113 runs, with Pat Cummins scoring 24 and Aiden Markram making 20 runs. KKR chased down the total with 8 wickets in hand, with Venkatesh Iyer scoring 52*. Mitchell Starc was given the Player of the Match for 2/14. KKR became IPL 2024 champions, and this was their third IPL championship overall, after winning the title in 2012 and 2014.

KKR and Shreyas Iyer controversy
The surprise came when Kolkata Knight Riders decided to release Shreyas Iyer ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Reports had stated that things were not right with Iyer and KKR management, and Punjab Kings bought Shreyas Iyer for INR 26.75 crore in the mega auction.
However, the tale did not end there. When Iyer told the world that he didn't receive enough credit for winning the KKR title the previous year, he didn't hold back. Most of the attention went to mentor Gautam Gambhir, who is currently India's head coach. Young players have credited him with a turnaround.
Since then, Shreyas Iyer has guided the Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final. He also had a fantastic start to the IPL 2026, winning the first six league games out of seven.

Notably, in 2025, on this day, May 26, Kolkata Knight Riders had posted a few creatives on social media to celebrate the first anniversary of their IPL 2024 win. However, KKR noticeably left out Shreyas Iyer from those photos and posters and didnβt even credit him in the captions.
And now, on May 26, 2026, KKR shared special posts on X and Instagram, and for a second year in a row, Shreyas Iyer went missing from the posts. Other posts display the performance statistics of KKR players in the IPL 2024 final, while the main post features Andre Russell holding the trophy over his head.
