Team India landed on the wrong side of history as they lost the first T20I of the 2-game series to Ireland in Belfast. After the humiliating defeat, fans started missing ex-captain Suryakumar Yadav as social media flooded with memes and messages.

For context, the ongoing Ireland tour is the first series played without T20 World Cup 2026 winning captain Suryakumar Yadav, as he was sacked from captaincy and dropped from the team at the same time, owing to poor form.

Shreyas Iyer replaced him as captain of India’s T20I team, but on his debut as skipper, India lost their first-ever international game to Ireland.

Fans miss Suryakumar Yadav after Ireland’s humbling

In the first T20I, Ireland posted 182 runs on the board in the first innings. Chasing the target, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan departed on single-digit scores.

Apart from Abhishek Sharma’s half-century, no player succeeded in crossing the 25-run mark. Eventually, India were bowled out on 148, thus losing the contest by 34 runs.

As Ireland humbled India to script history, fans on social media started missing Suryakumar Yadav, as his captaincy record was stellar.

Under SKY’s leadership, India rarely lost a series. Even in the T20 World Cup 2026, the men in blue lost only one game in the entire tournament and defended the title successfully.

Hence, many believe the decision to sack him as captain after an ICC trophy win was an absurd and terrible decision.

Shreyas Iyer fails as captain in his first assignment

Having said that, fans missed Suryakumar Yadav deeply because Shreyas Iyer failed to fulfil expectations. Despite being a successful IPL captain, he struggled to translate that success into international cricket.

Also, with the bat, he scored just 3 off 7 balls. Hence, fans argued that if Iyer cannot contribute with the bat, there was no point sacking Suryakumar for poor form.

However, it’s important to note that this is just the first game of Iyer as captain. With the second T20I and a 5-game series against England still on the cards, the skipper is likely to regain form in the near future.

But until then, questions remain as to whether dropping Suryakumar Yadav after a successful World Cup journey was the right decision.

What did Shreyas Iyer say after the loss?

Meanwhile, in a post-match presentation, Shreyas Iyer broke his silence on India’s humiliating defeat vs Ireland in the first T20I. Despite the collapse while chasing, Iyer did not blame the batting completely.

Instead, he focused on the bowling execution. The captain said India’s bowlers started well and picked up early wickets, but after that, they lost control. Ireland's batters were allowed to hit too many shots straight down the ground.

According to Shreyas Iyer, the pitch was not a high-scoring one, and a total around 140 runs would have been competitive. But Ireland reaching 182 changed the game completely.
