Indian Fans Lambast Daren Sammy [Source: X, AFP]
Daren Sammy, former West Indies great, landed in hot controversy after he subtly criticised the playing conditions in India during the recent West Indies tour. Fans lashed out at him for making excuses and spreading unnecessary hate against the country.
Recently, India beat New Zealand in the third T20I by a massive margin of 6 wickets. The batters chased down the target of 199 runs in just 13.2 overs after Abhishek Sharma scored a remarkable century.
Daren Sammy received backlash from Indian fans
However, reacting to India’s big victory over New Zealand, West Indies legend and coach Daren Sammy passed a controversial take. He said that the West Indies team deserve praise because they challenged this strong Indian side.
But in the same X message, he suggested that batting-friendly pitches, smaller boundaries and wet balls made conditions difficult for visiting bowlers. Sammy likely meant that Indian conditions were designed to favour the batters, and hence he is proud that West Indies managed to draw the T20I series against India.
However, Indian fans didn’t take the opinion lightly. Many felt that it was a clear dig at Team India to accuse them of neglecting bowlers and being biased to batters while curating the pitches.
Fans accused Daren Sammy of spreading hate against India. Many also questioned why the pitch debate is always limited to India.
"But this match is happening in NZ bro 😭" - @KartikSharmaFC
"Daren, improve your cricket instead of making excuses. Both teams face the same conditions. WI gain viewership, revenue and global recognition by playing India, not vice versa. If you don't want to face India, don't come - not even for the IPL . Simple. #JustLame" - @ViratAwasthi16
"If smaller boundaries matters then why NZ couldn't make 200+ at least" - @ManishK8088
Notably, West Indies visited India for a multi-format bilateral series earlier this month. The 5-game T20I series ended in a 2-2 draw after the fifth game got washed out due to rain.
Sammy takes a U-turn after outrage
Meanwhile, after Indian fans lashed out at Daren Sammy on social media, the West Indies legend issued a follow-up statement. He said that even on a different continent, with bigger boundaries and slightly less batter-friendly pitches, bowlers are still under pressure.
In this tweet, Sammy talked about how conditions haven’t changed across continents. He didn’t single out the Indian subcontinent particularly in this message.
Sammy also took a stand for bowlers, suggesting that the T20I format is still challenging for bowlers irrespective of conditions. Regardless, criticising India initially cost Daren Sammy, as he faced significant backlash from fans.
