Glenn Phillips is arguably the best fielder going around in international cricket at the moment, but on Tuesday, his fielding let him down as Kiwi commentator Simon Doull lashed out at him on air.

Phillips has taken some of the best catches in the history of cricket, but in the 3rd T20I against India, the New Zealand fielder tried to be a bit over the top as he missed out on a chance to dismiss the dangerous Abhishek Sharma.

Doull lashes out at Glenn Phillips for his fielding

Simon Doull is one of those rare commentators who never shy away from expressing themselves on air, and on Tuesday, he did the same by criticising Phillips’ efforts.

In the 10th over of the Indian innings, Kyle Jamieson bowled a short-of-a-length ball as Abhishek, who had scored a record-breaking century, pulled it towards the deep square leg region.

Phillips was placed at deep mid-wicket as he charged to his left to grab the ball. He was quick and had enough time to comfortably come near the ball to take the catch. However, the Kiwi fielder fumbled.

Instead of getting closer to the ball, he leaped into the air and stretched out his left hand to catch the ball. He failed in the process as the ball went past the boundary ropes. Doull wasn’t happy with Phillips’ showboating as he slammed him on air.

“Glenn Phillips didn’t need to be a hero there. You don’t need to do that when you can catch it on the run with both hands. The ball was flying at his hands height”.

Interestingly, on the very next ball, he caught Abhishek Sharma as the Indian batter failed to clear the ropes.

Phillips is known for taking breathtaking catches

The modern-day great when it comes to taking spectacular catches, the New Zealand fielder has made a habit of making the impossible look possible on a cricket field.

He is often placed inside the 30-yard circle near the cover, or point region, and throughout his playing career, Phillips has defied the odds to take breathtaking catches.

One of his most prominent efforts on the field was against India in the Champions Trophy 2025, when he plucked an astonishing catch to dismiss Virat Kohli.

In the 2026 CPL, the fielder grabbed a one-handed stunner near the boundary ropes to dismiss Sunil Narine. Hence, he assumed he could dismiss Abhishek with yet another blinder, but this time, he failed to deliver.
