On Saturday, May 9, a shocking report surfaced all over the internet that IPL 2026 veiwership has taken a massive hit. Notably, a report from BARC India and TAM Sports data stated that the TV viewership for IPL 2026 has taken a 26% dip.

The report has taken over the internet, and the fans are puzzled over the declined viewership. It is not an unusual day in BCCI’s office when they are concerned about the footfalls for IPL 2026. Nonetheless, the reality is out in the open, and this article will shed light on the possible reasons behind the decline in viewership.

Key Reasons Behind IPL Viewership Dip

1. Change in Viewing Pattern

Notably, the above-mentioned numbers only tell the half-story. For the unversed, only TV viewership has declined by 26%. The numbers don't reveal about the numbers recorded digitally.

Nonetheless, on the same day, Star Sports released that IPL 2026 has crossed 1.06 billion cumulative screens across digital and television platforms, marking a 7% jump over the previous season.

JioStar claimed over 515 million digital viewers during the opening weekend and more than 32 billion minutes of watch time. Hence, it tells that the fans have transitioned from watching content to digital devices than TV.

Therefore, the BCCI should not be worried as it is just a transition period from TV to digital and the numbers are only increasing.

2. Unavailability Of Key Players

So far, several key players have missed IPL 2026 due to injuries, which could be the reason behind decline in viewership. Notably, MS Dhoni, argubally, the biggest audience puller in the league, is yet to play a solitary game in IPL 2026.

MS Dhoni is nursing an injury and the fans are eagerly waiting for his return. However, there is no concrete update on the former CSK captain, which is why most of his fans have not showed interest in IPL.

Other than MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma also missed around four matches in IPL 2026. These are some big names and it seriously impact the viewership be it on TV or social media.

3. T20 World Cup Fatigue

Notably, before IPL 2026, there was this whole crazy for T20 World Cup in India. The Men in Blue successfully defended their title. It was an intense and enthralling month-long action which saw record viewership.

However, the IPL started just two weeks after the T20 World Cup 2026 conclusion, which kicked in T20 fatigue. It has been a lot of T20 cricket recently and the fans must have got tired watching continuous cricket.

4. Fall Of Betting Companies

After IPL 2025, the Indian government took a massive step and shut down betting and fantasy apps in India. It shook the entire industry and hurt brands likes Dream 11. Notably, it also led to a drop in viewership because a certain section of viewers belonged to the betting fraternity.
