India registered a 3-2 series victory over New Zealand in the five-match T20I series on November 1, 2026. The Indian team made a strong start by winning the first three matches and secured the series early. However, New Zealand bounced back by winning the final two games.

Despite the series victory, some Indian players failed to make a strong impact with their performances and could be dropped from the Sri Lanka tour of India 2026.

The Indian team's next T20I assignment will be against Sri Lanka, where the team will play a three-match T20I series. The first T20I match between India and Sri Lanka will be played on December 22, 2026.

Having said this, in this article, let’s take a look at three players whom the Indian think tank might drop for the Sri Lanka T20Is.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar could be one of the players who might miss India’s next T20I series against Sri Lanka. The experienced fast bowler struggled to perform during the series against New Zealand after making his India comeback after four years.

In his first three matches, Bhuvneshwar conceded 139 runs in 12 overs and picked up just one wicket at an economy rate of 11.58.

It is worth noting that he was then dropped from India’s playing XI for the fourth T20I in Auckland. However, the ace pacer from Meerut returned for the IND vs NZ 5th T20I in Hamilton but could not make a major difference and conceded runs at an economy rate of 10.25.

Axar Patel

Axar Patel is another player whose place could come under discussion ahead of the Sri Lanka T20I series. The all-rounder featured in the first four matches but missed the IND vs NZ 5th T20I.

The Indian all-rounder started the series with a useful 24 off 14 in the opening match but managed just 42 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 131.25.

It is worth noting that his performance with the ball was also not upto the mark. He conceded 51 runs in four overs in the first T20I and gave away 43 runs in three overs during the fourth match in Auckland.

Overall, with the ball, he managed only three wickets in four innings at an economy rate of 10.53.

Varun Chakaravarthy

Varun Chakaravarthy is another player who could be dropped from India’s plans for the Sri Lankan T20Is. The spinner returned to the team after an injury layoff and played only one game in the entire five-match series.

In the IND vs NZ 5th T20I, the mystery spinner picked up one wicket of Daryl Mitchell. But overall, Varun Chakaravarthy struggled to contain the opposition batters later in his spell and finished with figures of 1/45 in four overs.
