On Tuesday, July 28, Netherlands legend Ryan Ten Doeschate quit his job as India assistant coach after 2 years. The 46-year-old was brought into the Indian set-up by Gautam Gambhir in July 2024.
Notably, India’s recent UK tour was Ryan’s last assignment with the team, and he won’t travel with the side to Sri Lana. The former Netherlands star has returned to KKR as their assistant coach for IPL 2026.
The 46-year-old wants to spend more time with his family, which is why he didn’t extend his contract till 2027. Now, the assistant coach role is available, and this article will shed light on Ryan Doeschate’s potential replacements.
1. Vijay Dahiya
Former India player turned coach Vijay Dahiya seems to be a top choice to join Gautam Gambhir’s coaching set-up as Ryan Ten Doeschate’s replacement. The 53-year-old has previously worked with the Indian head coach at Lucknow Super Giants.

When Gautam Gambhir joined LSG as their mentor for IPL 2022 and 2023, Vijay Dahiya was part of the set-up as their assistant coach. The duo helped the Super Giants reach the playoffs for two consecutive seasons before Gambhir left LSG to join Kolkata Knight Riders.

2. Hrishikesh Kanitkar
If BCCI were to push a name, then Hrishikesh Kanitkar is someone who might edge past Vijay Dahiya to be the next India assistant coach. At present, Kanitkar is the head coach of India’s Under-19 team, but he travelled with interim head coach VVS Laxman as India’s batting coach for the recently concluded Zimbabwe tour.
It was not the first time that Kanitkar has travelled with the Indian set-up for an international series. India have had positive results under his tenure. The former India player has also served as India women’s batting coach and has experience being part of India’s coaching set-up across series.
Hence, Hrishikesh Kanitkar is a great name for the BCCI to mull and rope in to join Gautam Gambhir’s coaching set-up.
3. Wasim Jaffer
One of the surprises that may pop up is Wasim Jaffer. The former India opener has been associated with India’s domestic set-up for a long time. Jaffer is currently serving as Hyderabad’s mentor.
Wasim Jaffer can bring his experience on the table, and his wisdom on cricketing techniques will be crucial for the Indian team players. Wasim Jaffer has also previously served as Bangladesh's batting coach and also Odhisa's head coach.
Jaffer's presence will help the players improve their techniques and he also has an easy to approach personality.
It is worth noting thart Ryan Ten Doeshcate is not the only coach to call it a quit, but T Dilip has also quit the job.
