In a significant development around Indian cricket, star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has dealt a fresh setback. The southpaw, who has been struggling with his fitness, has been prescribed medicines for two more weeks, pushing his return to competitive cricket.
A report from Nitin Shrivastav stated that Yashasvi is still struggling with abdominal pain and recently met a doctor, who advised further evaluations and told him to continue his medication for two more weeks. Also, it added that Jaiswal can start his training and physical exercise from Wednesday and is expected to be fit to return to competitive cricket by the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals, which start from February 6.
What happened to Yashasvi Jaiswal?
On December 17, Yashasvi Jaiswal was rushed to the hospital following unbearable abdominal pain. The Indian southpaw was attended by the doctors, who diagnosed that the 24-year-old was suffering from acute gastroenteritis.
Notably, Jaiswal felt the pain after the Mumbai vs Rajasthan Syed Musthaq Ali Trophy match. The player was having trouble throughout the game, and the pain intensified post-game, following which he was admitted to Aditya Birla Hospital. At that time, the doctors administered IV drips and provided immediate medication.
After two weeks of rest, Jaiswal returned to action for the first time for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, where he struggled for runs and didn’t look his finest. Notably, the 24-year-old amassed just 64 runs in three innings.
Yashasvi Jaiswal misses key action due to injury
Because of the injury, Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to be a part of the recently concluded ODI series against New Zealand. The southpaw was the star in the previous white-ball series against South Africa, where he scored a century in the 3rd ODI.
Fortunately, Jaiswal is not in the scheme of things for India in T20Is, which is why he is not part of the T20 World Cup 2026, which starts from February 7. However, concerns are for his IPL participation now.
Jaiswal is in the contention to lead Rajasthan Royals and the upcoming season of IPL is less than 2 months away. Therefore, the inaugural winners would sweat in panic because they want the southpaw to be fully fit.
India dealing with loads of injuries
Besides Jaiswal, India are sweating over other players' fitness as well. Notably, Rishabh Pant is out of action because of a feet injury he sustained before the South Africa ODIs. Further, Washington Sundar has a side strain and will miss two more weeks of action.
At present, Sundar is facing a race against time to be fit in time for the T20 World Cup 2026 and the management sweats in panic. Other than Sundar, Tilak Varma recently underwent a surgery for testicular torsion and will miss the last two T20Is against New Zealand.
However, Varma will return for the warm-up fixture which India will play against South Africa on February 4 in Navi Mumbai.
