South African Head Coach Gives Massive Update On Kagiso Rabada [Source: AFP]Ahead of the important home series against Australia, South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad shared a major update on Kagiso Rabada’s fitness. The pacer is currently recovering from a right hamstring injury.Rabada, one of South Africa’s most successful Test bowlers, sustained a hamstring injury in August during a practice session. Since then, the Proteas have been carefully managing his rehabilitation.Shukri Conrad shares details on Kagiso Rabada’s fitnessWhile speaking to the ICC, South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad revealed that Kagiso Rabada's rehabilitation is progressing well and that he would be surprised if the pacer does not play the Test series against Australia, which is scheduled in October."It's going quite nicely, the rehab and the programs that he's on. I'd be very surprised if we didn't see him during the Test series. He's such a huge player for us, but he seems to reserve his best for Australia. So I'm pretty confident that we'll see KG (Rabada). There's still a little bit of work to be done,” Conrad said. However, Conrad also made it clear that the medical team will have the final say. Rabada still has some rehabilitation work to complete, so South Africa won't rush him back."I think we'll obviously have a really good idea close this week sometime, when he'll have had a few weeks of intensive treatment. By all accounts, things are looking really good. But KG is an absolute superstar. He's a real specimen, and he tends to recover quicker than the rest do. I'm very optimistic, but I'm led by the medical team, so my optimism counts for nought when it comes to medical,” he added. Also Read - Lungi Ngidi Ruled Out Of SA vs AUS ODI Series; Replacement NamedWhy is Rabada so important to South Africa?Kagiso Rabada is one of South Africa's most important fast bowlers, particularly against Australia. He has taken 58 wickets in 11 Tests against the Aussies, averaging 21.39. Rabada was also outstanding in the 2025 World Test Championship Final, where he took nine wickets as South Africa defeated Australia by five wickets at Lord's. So having him available would be a major boost for South Africa. For now, Kagiso Rabada is all set to miss the ODI series that will take place in the last week of September. But he still has nearly 3 weeks of time to recover in time for the first Test, which will go on floors on October 9 in Durban. What if Rabada isn't fit? Interestingly, in a scenario where Kagiso Rabada ends up missing the first Test against Australia, South Africa are well prepared to handle his absence. According to coach Shukri Conrad, the Proteas have enough depth in the pace lineup to cover for Rabada. However, the reality is that South Africa’s pace attack is depleted. Lungi Ngidi and Ottneil Baartman were recent victims of the hamstring bug. Hence, with options limited, the Proteas have a tough task at hand. They must ensure Kagiso Rabada is fit for the Durban Test, or else beating Australia will turn out to be a mighty task for them. Also Read - Jonathan Trott Appointed English Team Head Coach
