Roughly a month after naming former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as England’s next Test coach, the board has now announced former Englishman Jonathan Trott as a permanent coach for England Lions.Trott also helmed the England Lions team as their head coach earlier this month during their home T20 series against Sri Lanka.Jonathan Trott named England Lions coach before hectic winterFormer England middle-order batter Jonathan Trott has been named as the head coach of the England Lions cricket team. The cricketer also stood in as England Lions coach earlier this month for a two-match home T20 series against Sri Lanka. Under his guidance, the hosts won the series 2-0. Set to take permanent charge of the team, a busy winter lies ahead for the England Lions group and their newly-appointed coach, which will require them to travel to three different regions. We are delighted that he has agreed to lead our Lions programme during a busy winter.”The former England cricketer himself expressed his excitement in coaching the next generation of English players. The three-time Ashes winning legend said “I’m delighted to be back working in the England set-up and hugely excited to take on the role of Head Coach of the England Lions.”What is Jonathan Trott’s record as coach?Jonathan Trott holds an extensive coaching experience ever since he announced an early retirement from the game as a player. He previously served as an assistant coach of the England cricket team during the COVID-19 pandemic, and coached the England Lions group just earlier this month. From mid-2022 up until earlier this year, Trott coached the Afghanistan cricket team across all formats in international cricket. Under his guidance, Afghanistan reached the semifinal of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean a couple of years ago.Afghanistan also finished above the likes of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and defending champions England to secure sixth position at the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India.As new coach of the England Lions team, one of his primary objectives would be to prepare England’s next-in-line players for ODI cricket, as confirmed by ECB Performance director Ed Barney himself.A busy winter lies ahead for Trott and co.With Jonathan Trott as new coach, the England Lions team will be travelling to three different regions this winter for List A and first-class matches.In October, the England Lions will be touring West Indies before taking flight for South Africa the following month.
