Why Mohammad Amir Won't Even Come Close To Playing IPL Despite New Eligibility?

Mohammad Amir has officially become eligible to play in the IPL after acquiring British nationality, sparking excitement across the cricketing world. Fans were eager to see the seasoned pacer make his debut in one of the most competitive T20 leagues.

The announcement immediately raised expectations, imagining Amir showcasing his pace and experience on the IPL stage. Fans speculated about which franchises might show interest, hoping this veteran bowler could bring his expertise to the IPL.

However, despite this new eligibility, it still seems unlikely that Mohammad Amir will feature in the IPL ever. There are several major reasons that could prevent his participation, making an IPL debut for the Pakistani pacer highly impossible.

Reasons why Mohammad Amir won't feature in the IPL

1. BCCI Unlikely to Allow a Recently Pakistan International Player to Take Part in IPL

Mohammad Amir has very recently represented Pakistan in 2024 T20 World Cup and played the 2026 Pakistan Super League for Rawalpindi. His strong ties to Pakistan cricket make it extremely unlikely that the IPL or BCCI would permit him to feature in the IPL.

Historically, Pakistani players have faced bans from the IPL due to geopolitical tensions. Since 2008, following the Mumbai terror attacks, cricketers holding Pakistani passports were barred, and Amir’s recent international representation directly impacts his chance to play in IPL.

Although Pakistani player Azhar Mahmood played in the IPL with a British passport despite the ban, the current India-Pakistan relationship remains tense. Allowing a high-profile cricketer like Mohammad Amir now would be diplomatically sensitive, making his IPL debut highly unlikely.

2. Fear Of Backlash Due To Presence Of Pakistan Players

It is highly unlikely that the BCCI or IPL franchises would risk including a famous Pakistani cricketer like Mohammad Amir. His high profile and past controversies could create public and media backlash, affecting team and IPL reputation.

Although Azhar Mahmood played in the IPL before, he was not as famous as Amir and had no major controversies. Mohammad Amir’s past scandals make it much riskier for him to be included now in IPL for any franchise.

Times have changed over the past 15 years, with India-Pakistan ties worsening. Even recently, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s sister franchise Sunrisers Leeds faced backlash after signing Abrar Ahmed for The Hundred 2026, showing how fan and expert reactions could jeopardize brand value and sponsorship.

3. Declining Form and Age

Mohammad Amir is no longer the fast bowler he once was. By the next IPL season, he will be 35 years old, and IPL teams are generally reluctant to invest in overseas pacers at the twilight of their careers.

Amir does not play international cricket anymore, and his performances in leagues like the PSL, BPL, or CPL for Trinbago Knight Riders have not been extraordinary. IPL franchises prioritize players in top form to compete in one of the world’s best sporting leagues.

Given his age and current form, IPL teams are unlikely to rate Mohammad Amir’s skills highly enough. IPL demands consistent performance at an elite level, and investing in a pacer like Mohammad Amir past his prime carries significant risk.
