Sean Abbott's dismissal in BBL Qualifier clash [Source: X]
In a tense run chase against the Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers batter Sean Abbott had one of the craziest run outs that the Big Bash League tournament will ever experience. In what can be called a pretty bland win for the Scorchers, Sean Abbottâs dismissal gave something for the crowd to shout and hoot on about.
The Sydney Sixers were on the verge of collapse while chasing the Perth Scorchers 148-run target when the ill-fated event for Abbott took place. The batter, who was trying to make ends meet after Steve Smithâs sole contribution of 37 runs, had an unlucky dismissal, thanks to modern-day cricketing technology.
Sean Abbott faces one of the worst dismissals of all time
During David Payneâs over, with the Sixers needing 58 runs off 38 deliveries, Sean Abbott hooked a short-of-a-length delivery towards the leg side. The ball raced to the boundary, where Chris Evans was stationed and collected it.
With the scoreboard reading 90/8 and the run rate climbing, Abbott called for a risky double on what appeared to be an easy single. While racing back to the crease, Abbott nearly made his ground but failed to get his bat over the line after it slipped out of his hand and got stuck on the surface.
Abbott lost control of the bat as it flew towards the crease, while wicketkeeper Josh Inglis quickly collected the ball and broke the stumps at the strikerâs end. At that moment, Abbottâs body was in the air and clearly outside the crease.

Following a close third-umpire review, the decision went in favour of the Scorchers, as Abbott had failed to make his ground inside the crease.
Sean Abbott wouldnât have been enough for the Sixers
While Sean Abbottâs dismissal was a scenario for the Perth crowd to enjoy, the dismissal made no difference for the team. Sydney Sixers were a struggling lot who failed to meet the expectations from the very beginning.
Babar Azam, who had a lean patch throughout the season, continued his dismal run for Sixers while coming in to the chase and was out for a duck. Josh Philippe followed soon, leaving Sixers reeling at 21/2 at the end of 3.1 overs. With only Steve Smith having a steady contribution for the team, the Sixers saw hope.
Perth Scorchers seal Final berth in BBL 2025-26
Moises Henriques, the skipper himself, was dismissed for 2 runs in the game. Lachlan Shaw, Jack Edwards, and Ben Dwarshuis, all disappointed with the bat as the Perth Scorchers wrapped up the Sixers within 99 runs.
Mahli Beardman was the star of the Scorchers' bowling unit, picking up 3 crucial wickets while defending the target. Finn Allenâs 30-ball 49 helped Scorchers get the upper edge with the bat as Jhye Richardson and Ashton Turner chipped in with the bat too to post a total of 147 runs on the board.
Nevertheless, the win helped Perth Scorchers seal a Finale spot as Sydney Sixers will get another chance at the Finals on Challenger clash on January 23.
