During their playing days, Pakistan greats Imran Khan and Javed Miandad may have shared a love-hate relationship, but the duo has always had mutual respect for each other.

Apparently, Miandad played a massive role in Imran Khan becoming Pakistan's Prime Minister back in 2018, but, according to the legendary batter, the former all-rounder never acknowledged Miandad's role.

Years later, as the whole cricketing fraternity stands in support of the jailed Imran, his former friend has also come out in support of the former Pakistan PM.

Sobbing Javed Miandad demands respect for Imran Khan

While addressing Imran Khan’s case in an interview with the ISN media, former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad broke down on live television. According to the latter, the current government is being cruel to Imran, who has been in prison for over three years.

Furthermore, Miandad spoke about the close bond he shared with 'friend' Imran, sharing time during their stints with county and the Pakistan national team.

“We shared a very close bond, as we played county cricket and international cricket for Pakistan together. We used to be together in the UK for six months, and then the remaining time we used to play for Pakistan. I handed him over the captaincy, and we shared a great bond," Javed Miandad said while talking to ISN Media.

The 69-year-old suggested that everything can be sorted out by sitting down and talking it out. He also added that Imran “deserves nothing but respect”.

"I feel so sad thinking about him. May the Almighty give my friend Imran the strength to get through this. He deserves nothing but respect. Everything can be sorted out by sitting down and talking things through. All of this feels so unnecessary (sobs)."

Imran Khan row draws global cricketing support

Imran Khan's case has been picked up worldwide after 22 former captains wrote an open letter to the current Pakistan PM, Shehbaz Sharif. At the same time, former England captain Michael Atherton, for Sky Sports, interviewed the legendary all-rounder's sons at Lord's during the Test match between Pakistan and England.

Cricketers like Usman Khawaja and Pat Cummins have voiced their support for Imran, who has been in prison despite his deteriorating health on what are said to be corruption charges.

Meanwhile, PCB tried to threaten the ECB and the broadcaster to boycott the ongoing Lord's Test after the Sky Sports aired an explosive interview with Imran's sons, Sulaiman and Kasim.

How Imran Khan and Javed Miandad glued Pakistan?

Javed Miandad and Imran Khan were the most senior players during Pakistan's maiden and only ODI World Cup triumph in 1992. While Imran was the master of the ship, Miandad was his most beloved sailor during the marquee event.

The duo led Pakistan to victory in what is still regarded as the best underdog story of all time. That said, they also scripted countless wins for Pakistan during their 17 years together on the Pakistan team.
