There has been a long-running debate about who is the greatest Indian cricketer. With the baton passing from Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli and recently to Shubman Gill, the debate has only grown with time.
However, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has brought an end to the argument by naming the greatest-ever men's Indian cricketer.
Ashwin names Sachin Tendulkar as the greatest; edges out Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Kapil Dev
In a fun video posted by Cricinfo, former Indian Test legend Ravichandran Ashwin was asked to pick the greatest-ever Indian men's cricketer, featuring the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar and a lot more.
Surprisingly, he eliminated himself against Sourav Ganguly in the Round of 16, while the Prince of Calcutta lost to Sachin Tendulkar. Meanwhile, in another surprising move, he picked Jasprit Bumrah over Virat Kohli, who had beaten Rohit Sharma in the first round.

Meanwhile, Virender Sehwag edged out MS Dhoni. But the Nawab of Najahgarh lost to Tendulkar, while Kapil proceeded to the final as Ashwin picked the legendary all-rounder over Bumrah. Eventually, the Master Blaster won by beating the great Kapil Dev.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s special connection with Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar is regarded as the best batter to have ever graced the game. No one has racked up more international runs than Tendulkar, while he also holds the record for the most centuries.
The legendary batter not only played the sport for 24 years at the highest level but also inspired countless cricketers. Moreover, thanks to him, India secured several notable victories, including the illustrious ODI World Cup title at home in 2011.
Notably, Ravichandran Ashwin was part of the Indian squad, along with Tendulkar, during the 2011 WC win, contributing significantly during the quarter-final vs Australia and the group match against the West Indies.
Interestingly, Ashwin himself had credited the great Sachin Tendulkar for his success as a budding international cricketer.
What is Ravichandran Ashwin upto now?
Ravichandran Ashwin, meanwhile, has hung up his boots from international cricket and is transitioning to coaching, while taking up stints as a mentor/player in overseas T20 leagues.
Recently, he was involved with the San Francisco Unicorns in the Major League Cricket (MLC 2026) in the USA, but his season was cut short due to an untimely injury.
Ashwin has signed up as a mentor/player with the Dublin Guardians in the inaugural season of the ETPL. Although the legendary offie had a decent game personally, his team lost to Glenn Maxwell’s Belfast Wolves in their first game of the season.
The franchise is co-owned by the former Indian batter and coach Rahul Dravid in association with Hari Sethalapathy and Venkata Nori.
