Team India is currently at a crucial turning point in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. Although the team has performed well overall and reached the semi-finals, there is growing concern about the form of star opener Abhishek Sharma. The World No. 1 T20I batter has not been able to perform up to expectations in this tournament.

Recently, during the Super 8 match against the West Indies at the Eden Gardens, an incident caught everyone’s attention. After Abhishek Sharma was dismissed cheaply for 10 runs, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen giving him a sharp and serious look from the dugout.

Gautam Gambhir's reaction says it all

This “death stare,” as many are calling it, quickly went viral on social media. While coaches often show disappointment, this particular reaction seemed unusually intense. Therefore, many believe it could signal the end of Abhishek’s journey in this T20 World Cup.

India managed to secure their place in the semi-finals after defeating the West Indies by five wickets in Kolkata. However, Abhishek Sharma's poor form continues to be a major talking point. In the match, he scored only 10 runs off 11 balls, adding to his disappointing run in the tournament.

So far, he has played six matches and scored just 80 runs at an average of 13.33 and a strike rate of 131.14. Although he did score a half-century against Zimbabwe earlier, he has failed to deliver in crucial matches.

Akeal Hosein removes Abhishek Sharma

During the third over of India’s innings, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein dismissed Abhishek. The ball was short and aimed at his body, leaving him cramped for room. Abhishek attempted to pull it over the leg side, but instead, he mistimed it. The ball went high into the air, and Shimron Hetmyer ran forward to complete a good catch.

As Abhishek walked back to the pavilion, Hosein celebrated by putting a finger on his lips, silencing the crowd. When Abhishek was entering the dugout, Gautam Gambhir passed a stern look at the Indian opener.

Meanwhile, despite Abhishek’s failure, India managed to chase down a challenging target. Sanju Samson played a brilliant innings of 97 not out, guiding India to 199 for 5 in 19.2 overs. Earlier, West Indies had posted 195 for 4, thanks to contributions from Roston Chase, Rovman Powell, and Jason Holder.

Has Abhishek Sharma become a liability for Team India?

Now, an important question arises: Has Abhishek Sharma become a weak link in the team? His repeated failures have raised doubts, especially since India chose him over dependable finisher Rinku Singh. Many believe this decision may have backfired.

Looking ahead, India have other options. For example, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson could open the innings together. Additionally, Tilak Varma could strengthen the middle order. With the semi-final against England scheduled for March 5 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the team management faces a big selection decision.

Therefore, as India prepares for this crucial clash, all eyes will be on whether Abhishek Sharma gets another chance or if Gambhir’s stern look truly marked the end of his T20 World Cup campaign.
