Wasim Jaffer Asked About Rohit Sharma's ODI Future (Source: AFP)
Former Indian player Wasim Jaffer has reportedly applied for a position on the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Men's Selection Committee. His application comes as the board looks to appoint a new selector following Ajit Agarkar’s exit as chief selector.
According to a report, the BCCI has completed the interview process for the vacant position after Ajit Agarkar's exit.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which includes former India cricketers Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjpe, asked candidates several questions, including one on former captain Rohit Sharma’s role in India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Questions Asked To Selectors For Interview Based On Rohit Sharma's Case
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the CAC asked the candidates to share their views on Rohit Sharma’s ODI future. The question is important because there have reportedly been differences over whether Rohit can continue playing until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The selectors recently picked the India’s squad for the New Zealand ODI series. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal was not even picked as a backup opener for the second leg of the New Zealand ODI series.
With Shubman Gill unavailable, Jaiswal’s absence raised questions about the team’s plans and the selectors’ thinking regarding Rohit Sharma’s place in the side.
The next question asked the candidates why young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not getting a place in India’s T20I playing XI.
Another question involved a possible injury to Shubman Gill. Candidates were asked which players they would consider as backup leaders if Gill is not available.
Who Could Be Picked As The Next Selector?
Pragyan Ojha is currently serving as the interim chief selector following Ajit Agarkar’s departure. The same report states that the BCCI is looking for continuity in its selection process, with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
Former India cricketers Ramesh Powar and Salil Ankola are reportedly among the leading candidates for the vacant position. Wasim Jaffer has also entered the race, but his chances of being selected are believed to be uncertain.
Other candidates reportedly interviewed include Jacob Martin and Connor Williams, who have links to the Baroda Cricket Association.
As of now, the BCCI's final decision on appointing the chief selector is expected soon.
