Wasim Jaffer has reportedly applied for the selector’s post. The former Indian Test opener apparently registered for the same after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had invited applications for “one position” on its Men’s Selection Committee.

Just a few weeks ago, Ajit Agarkar stepped down as the chief selector of the Indian men’s cricket team, prompting the Indian board to appoint Pragyan Ojha for the role on an interim basis.

Wasim Jaffer in with a chance to become India’s next chief selector

Former Indian cricketer and Ranji Trophy legend Wasim Jaffer has registered his name for the selector’s post, as reported by Revsportz. As per the BCCI’s official invitations for applications for a position at the men’s selection committee, the deadline to submit all applications was October 14.

Jaffer now holds a shot at becoming the next chief selector of the Indian cricket team, if the legendary opener gets selected after getting interviewed by the BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee. The former cricketer also needs to carry a higher profile in terms of number of Test appearances among all applicants.

It is worth noting that the 48-year-old represented Team India in 31 Test matches during his playing days.

As of now, the BCCI selection committee is helmed by former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha. The cricketer was named as the interim head of the committee for playing the highest number of Tests for India among the quartet, with other members being fellow ex-players Shiv Sunder Das, Ajay Ratra and RP Singh.

A look at Wasim Jaffer profile

Wasim Jaffer retired from the game as one of the most prolific run-makers in Ranji Trophy history. In his overall first-class career, the legendary right-handed batter aggregated 19,410 runs from 421 innings spanning 260 matches at an average of 50.67.

He also plundered 57 hundreds and 91 half-centuries in the process. Notably, Jaffer charted 1,944 of those runs while playing Test cricket for India, and he was part of the Indian cricket team that secured historic Test series wins in West Indies in 2006 and in England in 2007.

He has also served as a coach in domestic, international as well as in IPL cricket, making him a strong candidate for the role.

His vast experience across various levels of cricket could further bolster his credentials and strengthen his case for a spot on the BCCI’s selection committee.
