Punjab Kings' IPL 2026 campaign has suddenly turned into a nightmare after another heartbreaking defeat against Mumbai Indians in their last encounter on May 14.
A team that once looked like one of the strongest contenders in the tournament is now fighting to keep its season alive after suffering five consecutive defeats.
PBKS went down to Mumbai Indians by four wickets in a dramatic clash on Thursday night. The defeat not only damaged their momentum but also created massive pressure ahead of their final two league matches.
Amid this tense situation, former India opener Virender Sehwag landed himself in controversy after making derogatory remarks about the franchise during a discussion on Cricbuzz.
PBKS suffer another crushing blow against MI
Punjab Kings entered the match knowing the importance of a victory, but despite posting a challenging total of 200/8, they failed to defend it against Mumbai Indians.

Prabhsimran Singh played a crucial knock of 57 off just 32 balls, smashing six fours and four sixes. However, the middle-order once again failed to capitalise, and the innings lost momentum during the crucial overs.
In reply, Mumbai Indians chased the target dramatically with one ball remaining. Ryan Rickelton attacked early with a quick 48, but it was Tilak Varma who completely changed the game with a sensational unbeaten 75 off 33 balls.
Will Jacks also played an important cameo, scoring 25* off just 10 deliveries to finish the chase.
The defeat left PBKS in fourth place with 13 points from 12 matches. After remaining unbeaten in their first six games (including one washout), the franchise has now lost five in a row, putting their playoff qualification in serious danger.
Punjab Kings face must-win situation in IPL 2026
Punjab Kings now have no room for mistakes. Their remaining matches against RCB and LSG have become virtual knockout games.
If PBKS manage to win both matches, they will reach 17 points, which would guarantee qualification for the playoffs. However, winning only one game would leave them stuck at 15 points and dependent on other teams’ results and NRR calculations.
A defeat in both matches would almost certainly end their IPL 2026 campaign. Although there remains a tiny mathematical possibility of qualifying with 13 points.
Virender Sehwag's remarks spark massive fan outrage
Following PBKS’ defeat, Virender Sehwag shared his thoughts during a discussion on Cricbuzz and admitted that he is left worried about the team’s future in the tournament.
He pointed out that Punjab's upcoming matches against RCB and LSG would define their playoff hopes.
However, what angered fans was Virender Sehwag's use of a derogatory term while describing Punjab Kings’ current situation. Many supporters felt the former Indian cricketer crossed the line, especially while speaking on a public platform.
One fan wrote that Sehwag was 'a disgusting individual' and questioned why such language was being used during a discussion.
With Punjab Kings already struggling on the field, Virender Sehwag's controversial remarks have added another layer of tension around the franchise at a crucial stage of IPL 2026.
