RCB might be the best IPL team at the moment, having won back-to-back championships, but things were not always as smooth as they are now. There was a time when the franchise became a laughing stock for its performances on the field, and the RCB fans suffered the most.
The team managed to reach the IPL finals in 2016, but between 2017-19, the Red Army endured painstaking campaigns, as they finished last in the points table in 2017, sixth in 2018, and once again finished last in the 2019 IPL season.
2017, in particular, was a horrendous campaign for the Virat Kohli-led side. The team was expected to deliver the goods as they managed to reach the finale in 2016, but what transpired was nothing short of misery for the side, and who could forget the 49 all-out vs KKR?.
When KKR humbled RCB, knocked them over for 49 in IPL 2017
It was match 27 of the IPL 2017 when KKR collided with RCB. It was the Kohli vs Gambhir battle, and the current Indian head coach came out on top.
KKR batted first and the RCB bowlers were terrific as the Knight Riders were dismissed for just 131 runs on the board.
The target was supposed to be a cakewalk for the Kohli-led side, but what followed was a disastrous night for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru as they got bundled out for just 49, the lowest total in IPL history, which still stands tall.
Kedar Jadhav scored 9 runs, and that was the highest individual score by an RCB batter as the team failed to deliver the goods. To date, the unfortunate record has not been broken, and despite winning two IPL titles, the team still gets mocked.
Venkatesh Iyer gives honest reaction as 49 all-out surfaces again
For years, Venkatesh Iyer, the Madhya Pradesh batter, represented KKR in the IPL, the same franchise that was responsible for RCB’s 49 all-out humiliation. However, ahead of the IPL 2026 season, he was released by KKR and RCB roped him into their side.
Till last year, he was a part of the KKR side that inflicted an unwanted batting record that still stands tall, but now, Venkatesh is a part of the RCB squad, and he, too, has to endure the same pain that many fans have felt since 2017.

Recently, he featured in a video of 2 Sloggers, and the anchors asked him about his opinion on RCB’s humiliation in 2017. Venkatesh jokingly said that any team can have a bad day, as the trio had a laugh.
He added that despite getting dismissed for the lowest IPL total, it shouldn’t take away from the fact that RCB has a rich IPL history, and they have built a legacy even before winning two IPL titles. At the same time, he also honoured KKR, his ex-side, calling them an outstanding team.
Venkatesh Iyer's performances for both KKR and RCB
The elegant left-handed batter has been playing in the IPL since 2021, and he has represented KKR and RCB in the marquee tournament. In his debut season, Venkatesh impressed everyone by scoring 370 runs in just 10 matches, including four fifties.
He became an integral part of the KKR squad and also won the IPL title in 2024 with them. Overall, the southpaw played 62 IPL games for the Knight Riders and scored 1468 runs.
In 2026, RCB acquired him, and despite not playing the first half of the season, Venkatesh played a pivotal role in helping RCB win yet another title.
In seven games in 2026, Venkatesh slammed 209 runs, with a strike rate of 186.61 as RCB won their second IPL title.
