Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Debut Plan Revealed As India Make Massive Change During 2nd T20I

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was once again excluded from Team India playing XI, this time from the second T20I of their away series in Ireland. A few weeks ago, the youngster was named in India squad for the T20I tours of Ireland and England owing to his IPL 2026 riches for the Rajasthan Royals.

The 15-year-old was also one of the biggest talking points in the lead-up to the series, only for fans in Ireland to be left disappointed after he was overlooked for the second consecutive match.

It now appears that denying Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his international debut was a strategic ploy on part of the Indian team management, as hinted by India’s early act in the series-decider against Ireland in Belfast on Sunday, June 28.

Sanju Samson replaced behind the stumps, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi debut hinted

Team India has a settled opening pair in the form of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson at the moment, with Ishan Kishan batting at number three to constitute a formidable top-order. The trio also fired on all cylinders for the Indian cricket team in their victorious 2026 T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year

While Samson also serves as India’s wicketkeeper, the dashing opener kept wickets as usual in the first T20I of the series against Ireland on Friday, June 26. However, while the cricketer played the second T20I for India, his wicketkeeping role was handed over to Ishan Kishan instead.

Samson’s sudden demotion from his wicketkeeping job indicate that the dashing opener might be dropped from India’s playing XI in England next month to accommodate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at the top instead.

It is worth noting that Sanju Samson is already undergoing a major form concern with the bat, as evidenced by his underwhelming IPL 2026 run and the flop show in the first Ireland T20I. In his last eight IPL 2026 innings, the right-handed batter scored just 184 runs, which included 87* in a single game.

Against Ireland earlier this week, the cricketer was dismissed for just five as India lost the series opener by 34 runs.

What does it mean for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?

With the team management stripping Sanju Samson of his wicketkeeping role, Gautam Gambhir and co. appear to be laying the groundwork for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's inclusion in the playing XI later in the series.

However, rather than handing the 15-year-old his maiden international cap immediately, the management may be easing him into the senior setup, allowing him time to acclimatize before making his India debut.

Dropping struggling Sanju Samson is also feasible for India, considering the presence of Ishan Kishan provides the team management a backup wicketkeeper option.

India takes the early wickets, Ireland motor towards recovery

Much like the first T20I, Indian fast bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana once again took the early Ireland wickets in the series-decider in Belfast on June 28. Debutant Prince Yadav also struck early by dismissing Irish skipper Lorcan Tucker as the hosts slipped to 48-3 in 7.3 overs.

Harry Tector and Ben Calitz formed forces at the crease as the two cricketers attempt to lead Ireland’s recovery.
