Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been included in Team India squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series in Zimbabwe. After getting dropped from the Indian playing XI for the fifth T20I in England earlier this month, the 15-year-old will likely make his way back to the group in the absence of a ‘rested’ Sanju Samson.
However, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer refused to give an update about Sooryavanshi’s impending fate for the series, when the senior batter was asked about the same during a recent press conference.
Shreyas Iyer remains shut on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s fate in Zimbabwe
While speaking with the reporters during a press conference, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer was asked if Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will get to play for the ‘Men in Blue’ in the series against Zimbabwe.
The senior Indian batter, however, refused to talk about potential team combinations before the series, considering he just arrived from England and has only had a chat about the same with coach Gautam Gambhir so far.

Iyer said “I just arrived yesterday from England. I had a brief chat with the coach. He was talking about how the wicket will play, combinations we can go forward. It’s just a start-up, probably by evening we will be completely having that sort of information about how we are going to plan and execute things over here.”
Shreyas Iyer says youngsters do not need much advice
When asked if there is some advice he would like to impart into youngsters like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the Indian cricket team, the skipper said that all players just had a decent gap after the T20I series defeat in England and must have used this gap to course-correct themselves.
He said, “All youngsters have had good practise. They also got a decent gap after the T20I series in England. They must have rectified as to where they went wrong before. Personally, I do not need to give them much advise, because they must have already learned much in England.”
Shreyas Iyer added, “If they feel like asking, then I will explain. Because this is also my first time in Zimbabwe. So, I will look forward to adapt as quickly as possible. As captain, I just want to extract the best performances out of youngsters.”
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi likely to return to playing XI
Even though Shreyas Iyer refused to give away Sooryavanshi’s fate, the young Rajasthan Royals opener will likely make his return to the Indian playing XI for the series in Zimbabwe.
After making his international debut in England earlier this month, the 15-year-old was dropped from the fifth T20I owing to his three successive failures. Despite his unimpressive beginnings to international cricket, the youngster was once again named in India squad for Zimbabwe series, with senior opener Sanju Samson getting rested from the tour.
Notably, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was named in India squad for the tours of Ireland, England and Zimbabwe after enjoying a prolific IPL 2026 season for the Rajasthan Royals franchise. He bludgeoned nearly 800 runs in the tournament to win the coveted ‘Orange Cap’ award.
The blistering opener also blasted 94 runs off just 29 balls last month against Sri Lanka A as India A won the 50-overs tri-series in the island nation.
India to face Zimbabwe in redemption series
After suffering demoralizing whitewashes in Ireland and England under the leadership of new captain Shreyas Iyer, Team India will now be aiming to course-correct its recent struggles in Zimbabwe.
The two sides will be taking on each other in a series of three T20Is between July 23 and July 26, and all matches will be hosted by the Harare Sports Club in Harare.
