Shreyas Iyer will lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming three-match T20I series in Zimbabwe. The newly-appointed skipper, on a trail of successive T20I whitewashes in Ireland and England, is seemingly determined to conjure his past demons in a bid to put Team India back to its winning ways.

Ahead of the series-opener in Harare, the Indian skipper has now vowed to rectify his team’s errors going ahead.

Shreyas Iyer “excited” for first-ever T20I series in Zimbabwe

While speaking with the reporters during a press conference in Harare, Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer expressed his excitement upon arriving in Zimbabwe for the first time in his career. The cricketer added that the Indian team is looking forward to a potentially exciting series against the hosts.

Iyer said “Excited to be here, this is my first time in Zimbabwe. The weather looks beautiful, people look happy. Looking forward to an exciting series over here.”

The senior batter also vowed to course-correct India’s momentum after suffering humiliating T20I series defeats in Ireland and England. The 31-year-old is of the opinion that his team needs to adapt to the conditions in Zimbabwe and take the positives out of its recent string of defeats in Europe.

The cricketer said “We definitely had a rough patch in England, but we got a lot of positives out of that. We got to know what we have to build as a team going forward, what kind of presence of mind and awareness and adaptability we need once we step on to the field. This is going to be a great challenge for us. Some of us are playing for the first time here. The quicker we adapt, the better result we would be getting.”

How has Shreyas Iyer fared as India captain so far?

Iyer was named as Team India captain a couple of months ago at an expense of struggling middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav, even though the latter led the ‘Men in Blue’ to a historic 2026 T20 World Cup win earlier this year.

So far under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the Indian cricket team is yet to notch up a single win in six completed attempts. After suffering a shambolic 0-2 series defeat in Ireland, the team conceded a 0-4 whitewash to England to mark six defeats in a row for India under the new regime.

The series defeat in Ireland also ended India’s three-year unbeaten series streak. For Iyer, the Zimbabwe series presents an opportunity for redemption, with the skipper eager to put India's disappointing run behind him and lead the team back to winning ways.

India to face Zimbabwe in three-match series

Team India will now face Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series between July 23 and July 26. The entire series will be hosted by the iconic Harare Sports Club in Harare.

The opening match will commence from 4:30 PM IST onwards.
