Sooryavanshi angry with IPL franchises [Source: AFP]
When the Rajasthan Royals splashed 1.10 crore to acquire the services of teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, eyebrows were raised as experts believed RR had made a huge mistake by picking an unknown commodity in their squad for the IPL 2025 season.
However, all the doubters turned into believers as Sooryavanshi tore down the IPL in his debut campaign, and also struck a century against the Gujarat Titans to announce his arrival against the best in the business.
The Rajasthan Royals had built a reputation as one of the few IPL teams that scout young talent and nurture them to attain a high-profile status. That was the same thing RR did with Sooryavanshi, and fast forward 1.5 years later, the youngster was picked in the Indian squad for the Ireland and England T20Is.
Interestingly, the same people who have now turned ‘Sooryavanshi paglu’ had doubts regarding his talent as only two IPL franchises bid for him in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
The two IPL franchises that wanted Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in their team
In the IPL 2025 mega auction, Sooryavanshi’s base price was just 30 lakhs, and not too many franchises showed any interest in buying him. Perhaps, they were apprehensive of spending their money on an unknown talent.
The only two sides that went all out to buy the southpaw were the Rajasthan Royals, and the Delhi Capitals. It was a tug of war between the two sides as the Royals and the Capitals went hard at each other.

For some reason, the Capitals didn’t bid after the bid reached the 1 crore mark, as RR last bid at 1.1 crore and bought the teenager.
Sooryavanshi upset with other 8 IPL franchises
Speaking to the Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi was visibly upset and surprised that only two IPL franchises went after him in the mega auction.
“Honestly, when I was picked, I was thinking that only two teams bid for me. Why? I play well, I had done well. Other teams should also have come for me.”
For some, the statement might sound arrogant, but it was Sooryavanshi’s belief that he had the potential, and he had done enough to attract more bidders in the IPL auction.
Sooryavanshi makes all IPL franchises regret their auction decision
In the IPL 2025 season, the young batter warmed the bench before an unfortunate injury to Sanju Samson brought a change in his life. RR needed an opener to replace Samson, and Sooryavanshi was brought into the playing XI.
The decision paid off immediately as he smacked 252 runs in seven matches, with a strike rate of 206.56.
Even after his debut exploits, Sooryavanshi was expected to be a one-season wonder, but what transpired in 2026 stunned everyone.
The RR opener dragged his franchise almost single-handedly to the playoffs, only to lose in Qualifier 2 against the Gujarat Titans. The left-handed batter played 16 matches, and finished as the highest run-getter with 776 runs, with a strike rate of 237.31.
He swept numerous IPL awards as franchises regretted their decision of not going after the youngster during the IPL 2025 mega auction.
