India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav praised head coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup final against New Zealand. He said Gambhir had got rid of the culture where personal milestones are appreciated over team contributions.
Yadav appeared for the pre-final press conference in Ahmedabad. India will face New Zealand for the title-decider on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the same venue where they lost the ODI World Cup final in 2023.
Suryakumar Yadav opens up on Gautam Gambhir’s mindset
Meanwhile, talking about head coach Gautam Gambhir, Suryakumar Yadav heaped praise on his coaching style. He said Gambhir is someone who is passionate and has eliminated star culture where personal milestones are given more weight.
He added that Gautam is very team-orientated and is ready to contribute in every capacity he can.
"Unka (Gautam Gambhir) ka bas chale to khud hi pad pehen ke aa jaaye. Unhone personal milestone ka funda hata diya hai time se," SKY said in press conference.
Gautam Gambhir has had a controversial career as a head coach. Under his guidance, India lost the Test series against New Zealand and Australia. They also missed out on the WTC 2025 final qualification.
However, in white-ball cricket, his record has been flawless. Last year, India won the Champions Trophy 2025, and this year, the team is inching closer to another ICC title.
Hence, the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 final will be the ultimate litmus test for Gautam Gambhir, as his coaching career future will depend a lot on the final’s results.

Yadav praises Rohit Sharma’s legacy
Apart from Gautam Gambhir, Suryakumar Yadav also praised former captain Rohit Sharma. The latter led India to its second T20 World Cup title as captain in 2024.
Now, Yadav is succeeding him and guiding India to what could be its second back-to-back title.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav praised Rohit’s legacy, saying he left the team at the very top when he retired after winning the trophy in 2024. His job is now to follow in his footsteps and ensure India wins that title.
"The place where Rohit Sharma left the team was at the top. I’m just following his footsteps and continuing from where he left off," he added.
Rohit Sharma, who is also the brand ambassador for this year’s T20 World Cup, is expected to mark his presence in Ahmedabad on March 8.
New Zealand firm on ‘silencing’ India
That being said, before the final, mind games between the two teams have already begun. New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner said he would love to silence the huge crowd in Ahmedabad by beating the home team.
Santner repeated the same as Australia captain Pat Cummins used during the ODI World Cup final 2023.
However, Suryakumar Yadav had the perfect response for Mitchell Santner. He said everyone seems to be stuck in the same crowd and that they should bring something new to the table.
As for the final, India’s skipper is confident and shrugged off the fear of any pressure.
