Suryakumar Yadav has responded to Mitchell Santner’s claims of New Zealand trying its best to ‘silence’ the Ahmedabad crowd in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 final. A day before the final, Santner channelled his inner Pat Cummins and vowed to silence the crowd and “breaks a few hearts” by lifting the T20 World title for the first time in history.

It is worth noting that Cummins popularised a similar remark during the 2023 ODI World Cup final build-up, when he spoke about the idea of silencing the Ahmedabad crowd before Australia went on to defeat India. South Africa Women’s captain Laura Wolvaardt made a similar remark, albeit unsuccessfully, prior to the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup final as played at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Suryakumar Yadav roasts Mitchell Santner for imitating Cummins

While speaking during a pre-match press conference on Saturday, March 7, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav responded to Mitchell Santner’s remark of ‘silencing the crowd’ at the Narendra Modi Stadium during the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Channelling his inner Pat Cummins, Santner made the claim during his press conference earlier on the same day.

Suryakumar, who was at the receiving end of the 2023 World Cup final thrashing at the hands of Cummins’ Australia, poked fun at the New Zealand skipper for re-using the same old line originally popularized by the Australian skipper nearly two-and-a-half years ago.

The Indian captain laughingly said, “Sab same line chipka rahe hai, kuch different to bolo.”

Suryakumar Yadav admits World Cup final ‘big occasion’ for him

Suryakumar Yadav also signified the scale of the occasion as he prepares to lead the national side in the 2026 T20 World Cup final. The senior Indian batter stated that while he is feeling a bit nervous, the high-stakes nature of the match will also be a fun and “big occasion” to play.

The cricketer said, “Special feeling to lead team in the final, there will be butterflies in the stomach. When there is no pressure, there is no fun. Big occasion for me and my family also.”

India chasing history against New Zealand in final

Team India recently trumped England by seven runs in a high-scoring semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai earlier this week. The outcome helped the ‘Men in Blue’ soar into their second T20 World Cup final in a row, where they will face New Zealand at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, March 8.

If Suryakumar Yadav and co. manage to defeat New Zealand, India will become the first side in history to win two T20 World Cups in a row and three overall. Moreover, the Indian team will also become the first team in the world to lift a T20 World Cup title on home soil.

With form and crowd support on their side, the hosts will be aiming to put up their best foot forward on the big day in Ahmedabad this weekend.
