Sri Lanka cricket fans will have something to rejoice about as the SLC has announced the starting date for their own Lanka Premier League 2026 season. Sri Lanka Cricket acquired a suitable window for their T20 competition after co-hosting the 2026 T20 World Cup from February to March.
This ensures improved availability of international players and seamless scheduling for the tournament around the nation this year.
Lanka Premier League history
The Lanka Premier League, or LPL's, first edition was held in 2020 with five teams from five regions in Sri Lanka: Jaffna Stallions, Galle Gladiators, Dambulla Vikings, Colombo Kings, and Kandy Tuskers. Jaffna Kings have won the Lanka Premier League three times.
However, there have been issues with the teams and their owners, and now the five teams that will feature in the LPL 2026 will be Colombo Kaps, Dambulla Sixers, Galle Marvels, Kandy Falcons, and Jaffna.

Sri Lanka Cricket announced the Lanka Premier League 2026 tournament schedule and host cities on Wednesday, April 22. The board revealed in a press release that its top domestic Twenty20 competition will be held in four locations in Sri Lanka in July and August of this year.
The Lanka Premier League will start on July 10 and conclude on August 5 with the championship game. According to the board, the games will take place from July 5 to August 6 at four significant international locations in Colombo, Pallekele, and Dambulla during the next season.
"The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 will be held from 10th July to 5 August 2026. The sixth edition of the much-anticipated T20 league will be played across four venues: SSC, Colombo; RPICS, Colombo; PICS, Pallekele; and RDICS, Dambulla," Sri Lanka Cricket stated.
From the sixth season, Sri Lanka Cricket intended to add a sixth team to the LPL. Teams from the current cities will still compete, nevertheless. Jaffna Kings and Colombo Strikers' contracts were terminated for noncompliance.
Foreign players' registration portal announced by SLC for LPL 2026 draft
While other T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League and the Pakistan Super League are using the player auction model, the Lanka Premier League has decided to go the player draft route. To distribute domestic and foreign cricket players among the five Lanka Premier League teams for the sixth season, the board will hold a comprehensive player draft.
For foreign players looking for contracts, Sri Lanka Cricket has set clear registration deadlines. Additionally, the board approved the opening date of the online registration platform for international players who wish to participate in the draft.
“The online portal for foreign player registration will open on May 4, 2026,” the official statement said.
Samantha Dodanwela was named the Lanka Premier League tournament director
The administrative framework overseeing the 2020-launched competition was also made clear by Sri Lanka Cricket. In order to guarantee seamless operations during the four-week Lanka Premier League season, the board affirmed that it will continue to collaborate with the IPG Group.
Additionally, SLC verified the tournament's leadership data. Samantha Dodanwela, a member of the Executive Committee, will continue to serve as Tournament Director; the board has expressed complete confidence in his ability to manage the forthcoming season.
"Mr. Samantha Dodanwela, who is an Executive Committee Member of the SLC, will continue to function as the Tournament Director," the statement concluded.
