Stephen Fleming was recently appointed as England’s Test coach at an expense of an outbound Brendon McCullum. The timing certainly worked out in favor of Fleming, considering the former New Zealand captain also parted ways with the CSK franchise around the same period.

It now appears that Fleming is approaching another member of the CSK coaching staff for a potential gig in the England Test set-up. 

Stephen Fleming approaches Mike Hussey for England batting coach role

As reported by 7Cricket, Stephen Fleming has made an “informal approach” to former CSK colleague Michael Hussey for a potential gig for the England Test team.

Apart from sharing an Antipodean rivalry with each other, both Fleming and Hussey have also been associated with the CSK franchise in the IPL. While the two cricketers started out as CSK players in the inaugural edition of the tournament back in 2008, Michael Hussey kept playing for the franchise until 2015 with Fleming serving as team’s head coach. 

Moreover, the legendary Australian batter was even roped in by the CSK management to join Stephen Fleming’s coaching set-up as a batting coach in 2018. While Fleming recently parted ways with the franchise, Hussey continues to remain as CSK’s batting coach. 

It is worth noting that despite receiving a tempting coaching offer from a former associate, the 51-year-old Australian has not made any response yet. However, the report also indicated that Hussey has not shut the door on the possibility of joining the England Test setup.

The former Australian cricketer is already in England at the moment, albeit as head coach of the Welsh Fire franchise in The Hundred 2026 season. With Hussey at the helm, the Welsh Fire team is placed second on the points table and looks one of the leading contenders to lift the trophy this time around.

Michael Hussey’s coaching career

Michael Hussey holds an extinguished coaching career, especially for the CSK franchise. During his time as CSK batting coach, the franchise lifted the coveted IPL title on three occasion. 

He has also previously served as the batting coach of the England team, and is currently in the country as Welsh Fire’s head coach in The Hundred 2026 season. 

England to poach another CSK coach for their coaching setup?

If Stephen Fleming manages to poach Michael Hussey for England, there is a strong possibility that the former Australian batter will leave his CSK coaching role in the IPL. 

However, Hussey has previously served as England’s batting coach. He was part of England’s coaching setup that lifted the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia. 

With Hussey’s England stint making no difference to his CSK gig at the time, the former Australian batter could once again juggle both coaching roles, provided there are no scheduling conflicts.
