SLC to rattle Mohsin Naqvi [Source: AFP]
On Sunday, the Pakistan team decided to pull the trigger, as the side announced they would not play against India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Pakistan will participate in the marquee competition, but will not take part in the group stage match against their arch-rivals on February 15.
According to reports, the call to boycott the India clash is mainly due to the injustice done by the ICC against Bangladesh, and the Pakistan government took this important decision on Sunday.
Sri Lanka's economy to be hit due to Pakistan boycott
The sporting implications are significant, but this boycott decision may also have an economic impact on Sri Lanka, and the country could be severely affected by it. An India-Pakistan clash in any ICC tournament generates a wealth of revenue for the host nation, with thousands of fans and media personnel travelling to cover the mega clash.
Several reports have stated that the hotels in Colombo are full for the mega T20 World Cup clash, but now, with Pakistan not playing against India, cancellations are expected to surge, affecting the Sri Lankan tourism.
Tourism is a key factor in boosting Sri Lanka’s economy, and with fans not turning up for the biggest clash of the summer, the Sri Lankan economy could be shaken.
SLC to file complaint with ICC
With the tournament set to take place in less than a week’s time, Pakistan has put the T20 World Cup matches in jeopardy, and as a result of no India-Pakistan clash in Sri Lanka, the SLC will reach to the ICC, demanding justice.
According to News18, SLC is closely monitoring the situation and will raise a formal complaint against PCB, and their Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi as the nation will hit rock bottom due to the sudden cancellation of the marquee contest between two Asian giants.
Consequences Pakistan could face for boycotting India clash
The Pakistan government has made an abrupt call and the PCB is fully backing them, but the team could face severe consequences for this sudden boycott decision.
The ICC will have a meeting in the next 24 hours to decide the fate of the Pakistan team, and if the reports are to be believed, then PCB could land in trouble for their action. The side could face legal, financial and disciplinary actions, and a final decision will be made soon.
Heavy financial penalties could be imposed on the Pakistan side, and apart from it, overseas players may be restricted from participating in the PSL, which is Pakistan’s premium T20 tournament. Pakistan could also face points deduction in the WTC table, which would affect their chances of qualifying for the finals.
With the India vs Pakistan clash cancelled, the official broadcaster will ask for compensation from the ICC, and the cost runs into millions. As a result, the ICC could pass these costs directly to the PCB, urging them to repay it to the broadcasters.
Moreover, Pakistan could also be barred from playing in future ICC tournaments, which could dent their profitability from the ICC shares.
