Pakistan boycott World Cup match vs India - (Source: AFP)
In a significant development, PCB has confirmed that Pakistan will participate in upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7. However, the board has clarified that the Salman Ali Agha-led side will boycott the match against India on February 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
For the unversed, PCB head Mohsin Naqvi met Pakistan PM Shehbaz Shariff on Sunday, February 1, following which the board decided to partially extend support Bangladesh, who were thrown out of the tournament by ICC over their unreasonable demand to shift World Cup games out of India.
Pakistan government confirms India boycott
Pakistan government took to Twitter where they confirmed that the Men in Green will play in T20 World Cup 2026.
"The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026. however. the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February 2026 against India," read the tweet.
What will be the repercussion of Pakistan's boycott?
At present, the ICC has not responded to Pakistan's boycott for India clash, but if the Jay Shah-led council approves it, then it will be considered a forfeit and the Suryakumar Yadav-led side will be awarded 2 points.
ICC's rules for forfeit matches
Clause 16.10.7 states that in the event of a forfeit, "the net run rate of the defaulting team shall be affected in that the full 20 overs of the defaulting team's innings in such forfeited match shall be taken into account in calculating the average runs per over of the defaulting team over the course of the relevant portion of the competition."
Pakistan's net run-rate will take a big hit, but India's net run-rate will remain unaffected.
Notably, earlier there were rumours that the PCB is actually interested in boycotting India match but worry ICC sanctions. Now since the government has made the decision official, the International Cricket Council will soon jump into action because the boycott will result into huge financial loss for the broadcasters.
Also, the BCCI is yet to respond to Pakistan's decision and soon an official communication is expected from the board.
How can ICC punish Pakistan for the boycott?
The ICC might restrict Pakistan from playing any bilateral series and dismiss the NOCs of overseas players in the PSL, while also banning the Men in Green from the Asia Cup after PCB's decision to not send its team to the T20 World Cup.
Also, the ICC can restrict the funds that they distribute to PCB and alongside several other sanctions, which can make the PCB financially crippled. Therefore, it is likely that in the coming days, Pakistan might reverse their decision.
Notably, Naqvi had met Shehbaz Sharif on Monday, January 26 as well, but during that meeting, the two decided to meet again on Sunday, where a final decision will take place.
Talking about Pakistan's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, they will play the curtain raiser game on February 7 against the Netherlands. At present, the Men in Green are in top form as the Salman Ali Agha-led side handed Australia a handsome 3-0 defeat at home.
Despite being in form, Pakistan have dented their chances heavily as they will lose two points against India on February 15.
