On Sunday, the Pakistan government finally approved the national men’s cricket team’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup. As a result, captain Salman Agha and his team received permission to travel to Sri Lanka, which is one of the hosts of the tournament. Pakistan are placed in Group A and are scheduled to play most of its matches there.

However, an unexpected and controversial decision followed soon after. It was officially confirmed that Pakistan will not play its Group A match against India on February 15 in Colombo.

For several weeks, the PCB had been expressing strong dissatisfaction after Bangladesh were removed from the 20-team tournament. According to the PCB, Bangladesh were treated unfairly, and this situation led to repeated threats of withdrawal from the competition.

Although Pakistan will still take part in the World Cup, skipping such a high-profile match could create serious trouble. Therefore, it is important to understand how this decision could harm the Pakistan Cricket Board in the long run.

All possible implications for Mohsin Naqvi’s PCB

1. Risk of complete tournament ban

Firstly, the International Cricket Council is currently holding meetings to decide whether selective participation violates the tournament agreement. If the ICC concludes that refusing to play one match damages the integrity of the competition, Pakistan could be removed from the current or future editions of the ICC tournament.

In an extreme situation, another associate nation such as Uganda could replace Pakistan in this tournament, which would be a huge blow to the country’s cricketing reputation.

2. Freezing of ICC revenue payouts

Secondly, the PCB heavily depends on the ICC’s annual financial distribution to run domestic cricket and pay player salaries. Pakistan usually receives close to 30 million dollars each year.

The ICC has the power to freeze these payments as a disciplinary action. As a result, the PCB could face serious financial pressure across all levels of cricket.

3. Compensation to broadcasters

Moreover, the India-Pakistan match is the most valuable fixture for broadcasters. ICC’s main broadcast partner, Jio-Star, earns massive revenue from advertisements and sponsorships during this game.

According to the report, cancelling this match could result in losses of between 25 and 40 million dollars. Under existing agreements, the ICC can pass these legal claims to the PCB. Consequently, Pakistan may be forced to pay full compensation for the financial damage.

4. Impact on bilateral series and rankings

In addition, this decision could affect Pakistan’s future bilateral series. Other ICC boards may refuse to tour Pakistan.

Even if matches are played, the ICC might not count the results toward rankings or the World Test Championship points table. Over time, Pakistan could slide down global rankings and lose competitive standing.

5. Damage to PSL

Finally, the Pakistan Super League could suffer greatly. The ICC may instruct other boards to stop issuing No Objection Certificates to their players. As a result, only free agents or retired players would be available. Notably, this situation would reduce the league’s quality, global appeal, and commercial value.
