South Africa, under Aiden Markram's leadership, were the best outfit in the recently concluded T20 World Cup till the Super 8 stage, but they were knocked out by New Zealand in the semifinal at Kolkata.

The Proteas went to the semifinal, winning all their games in the Group stage and the Super 8 fixtures. During their brilliant run in the 2026 T20 World Cup, winning against the eventual winners, India, the West Indies, and also defeating the Kiwis once.

In the megaevent, South Africa were the only team to beat the Men in Blue, who fell in the trap laid by Marco and Keshav Maharaj as India lost by 76 runs. After beating India, the road to the semis became easy-peasy: one more victory in the Super 8s would have qualified them, given they won by a massive margin against India.

South Africa didn’t let their guards down as they thrashed the West Indies and Zimbabwe with clinical victories in the Super 8s.

“I think of the stupidest team of the tournament? South Africa. Because if South Africa had allowed the West Indies to beat them in the Super 8s, India would have been knocked out. These things shouldn’t happen and usually don’t happen. I’m just saying that if you want to win a World Cup, the best way is to eliminate the best team early," Michael Vaughan said on Stick to Cricket podcast.

Considering the Proteas had lost to the West Indies, the would have gotten tremendous pressure ahead of the final Super 8 game against Zimbabwe. Moreover, they had lost to the Chevrons from a similar situation in the 2022 T20 World Cup, which later knocked them out of the tournament.
