Who would have thought that the defending T20 World Champions, India, would go on to lose 6 matches on the UK tour and wouldn’t taste a single win? That’s exactly what happened as Ireland decimated the Shreyas Iyer-led side in the two-game series, and it was followed by the drubbing at the hands of England.

This was certainly not on the cards, as India were a better team than both Ireland and England, but the newly appointed captain, Iyer, failed to inspire the side, and the team failed to put up a fight against either team.

Iyer’s captaincy has come under scrutiny, as the Suryakumar Yadav replacement has not won a single T20I game on the tour, and many have called for him to be stripped of his post.

Iyer's India blueprint for the T20 World Cup 2028

However, after the hammering in the 5th T20I, Iyer looked confident in his captaincy, and the skipper has already laid the blueprint for the road to the T20 World Cup 2028.

The middle-order batter was confident that the team would retain him as the captain for the ICC event (T20 World Cup 2028), as he desires to nurture players around him.

“Going forward, I need to be extremely positive in how I'm going to basically nurture everyone who is playing around me, especially in overseas conditions. We know we are going to play World Cup in Australia and many other series before that. So we need the best camaraderie to fit in these conditions," Iyer said at the post-game presser.

During the post-game press conference, Iyer’s statement gave a hint that the team management has confidence in his captaincy going forward.

India creates unwanted record under Iyer's captaincy

The dynamic batter was made the India T20I captain with the aim of taking the team forward, but so far, the Men in Blue have regressed in the last six matches.

India was expected to beat the Irish side easily in the two-match T20I series, but the depleted hosts thrashed India in one-sided battles. England then made a mockery of the Indian team by winning four games in the series, and also claiming the number one ranking.

In the process, Iyer created an unwanted captaincy feat, as for the first time in history, the Indian side has lost 4 T20I matches in a single series.

Who can replace Shreyas Iyer as captain if India plans to sack him

One thing is for sure: the Indian team management is ruthless, and if a player is not performing, he will face the exit door. Suryakumar Yadav was sidelined after winning the T20 World Cup, and if performances don’t improve, Iyer could face the same fate.

If the BCCI plans to sack him, there are a couple of players they can bring in as captain. The obvious name is Shubman Gill, who is currently out of the T20I team, but he has certainly put forward his name after a brilliant IPL 2026.

Under his leadership, a below-par Gujarat Titans team reached the final, and he, too, delivered with the bat. Another wildcard name who can replace Iyer as the India T20I captain is Ishan Kishan. The Pockey Dynamo was given the leadership responsibility in Pat Cummins’ absence, and the southpaw led from the front.
