Shreyas Iyer did not have a great start as India’s T20I captain, having suffered a humbling 0-2 defeat in Ireland. Taking over the role from Suryakumar Yadav, who just helped India win the T20 World Cup 2026, it was a hammering blow for Punjab Kings captain, particularly because he was not in the mix of things for India’s T20 set-up for a good amount of time.

However, things can change, and it could happen in a real quick. Shreyas will be in action once again on July 1, when India will begin their five-match T20I series in England. With him seeking redemption, there is no better result than India winning a T20I series in England to shut the noise around him.

Shreyas Iyer Opens Up On Suryakumar Yadav’s 1st Official Message

As Suryakumar Yadav is no longer in the mix of things, Shreyas Iyer took control and replaced him in India’s playing XI in T20Is as well.

Now, Shreyas has revealed exactly what Suryakumar Yadav told him after the BCCI made the official announcement. Shreyas’ remarks came during the press conference ahead of India vs England T20I series.

“Suryakumar Yadav is a similar kind of character. I’ve played a lot of domestic cricket with him. Just before coming here, he gave me inputs about how the management works and how the players would react in different situations. So yes, we had a really good interaction, and at the same time, there’s a lot to learn," Shreyas told the reporters.

Shreyas Iyer Failed To Shine With The Bat On T20I Captaincy Debut

Since becoming Punjab Kings captain, Shreyas Iyer has had a dream run in the IPL with the bat in hand. In IPL 2025, he had a strike rate of 175.07 for his 604 runs over 17 innings, averaging 50.33.

His spectacular numbers stayed intact in IPL 2026 as well, with 498 runs in 14 matches, at a strike rate of 168.81, which were enough to tell the audience he did his part.

Unfortunately, Punjab Kings have not won the IPL title under Shreyas Iyer just yet.

However, Shreyas had a dreadful start to kick off his journey as India’s full-time T20I captain. He could only make 13 runs in two outings in Ireland, striking at 92.86. He will be looking to improve his recent numbers when the five-match T20I series between India and England will get underway.

What's Next For Suryakumar Yadav?

Suryakumar Yadav had a bad T20 World Cup 2026 campaign for India, and even worse IPL 2026 for Mumbai Indians. As a result, he could even be released by MI, which pays ₹16.35 Crore for his services.

If that happens in real, he could join Hardik Pandya, who is on his way to leave MI as well. Now, time will tell where SKY, now aged 35, will land next to revive his T20 career.
