India all-rounder Shardul Thakur has found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after being penalised for showing dissent during a T20 Mumbai League 2026 match.
The incident took place during Eagle Thane Strikers' thrilling clash against Aakash Tigers MWS at the Wankhede Stadium on June 3.
The experienced player reportedly got involved in a heated altercation with one of the on-field umpires during the high-pressure contest.
Tournament officials later reviewed the incident and took disciplinary action against the Eagle Thane Strikers captain.
Narrow Loss Adds To Frustration For Eagle Thane Strikers
Chasing a target of 172 runs, Eagle Thane Strikers fought hard but were eventually bowled out for 171 in 19.5 overs.
The defeat against Aakash Tigers MWS was another frustrating result for Shardul Thakur and his team. After Aakash Tigers posted 172/9 (20 overs), the Strikers appeared well placed at several stages of the chase.
Jay Bista starred for the Tigers with a valuable 56 off 40 balls, while the Strikers’ bowlers managed to restrict the opposition from posting an even bigger total.
Shardul Thakur himself opened the bowling and delivered two economical overs, conceding only 11 runs without taking a wicket.
During the run chase, Sumeir Zaveri entered the match as an impact player and made 26 runs off 24 balls at a strike-rate of 108.33.

Sairaj Patil scored 39 runs from 23 balls at a strike rate of 169.57, while Siddhant Singh added a quick 37 from 19 balls. It is vital to note that Shardul himself later played a fighting knock of 25 runs from just 15 balls.
However, his dismissal in the 18th over proved to be a turning point. The Strikers eventually fell short by a single run.
Shardul Thakur Fined In T20 Mumbai League
Following the match, Shardul Thakur was imposed a penalty for showing dissent towards an umpiring decision.
According to reports, the all-rounder was found guilty of a Level 2 offence and was fined INR 20,000. In addition, he received three demerit points.
The disciplinary action was confirmed after officials reviewed the incident involving the veteran player and the on-field umpire. Reports stated that Shardul Thakur's behaviour during the match breached the league's code of conduct.

The latest controversy comes at a time when Shardul has already faced a challenging time in IPL 2026.
During IPL 2026, he returned to the Mumbai Indians after completing a trade from Lucknow Super Giants for INR 2 crore ahead of the season.
Shardul Thakur struggled to make a significant impact in IPL 2026. He picked up 12 wickets in 9 matches but conceded runs at an economy rate of 12.27.
