Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was the talk of the town throughout the recently concluded IPL 2026. Every time the 15-year-old stepped onto the field for the Rajasthan Royals, he pulled off something special and created history.
By the end of the season, he clinched the Orange Cap as the highest run-scorer, becoming the youngest player to do so, while also winning the Most Valuable Player of the season award, among other laurels.
With a breathtaking season at the top of the order, Sooryavanshi leapfrogged his seniors to find himself in the conversation for a spot in the Indian T20I team for the upcoming tour of Ireland, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.
Remarkable IPL 2026 for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Playing his second season — the first time starting as a first-choice opener alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wreaked havoc from the first match till the last.
In the season, where people had data about him and came in well-prepared after seeing his U19 World Cup final exploits, Sooryavanshi racked up 776 runs in 16 innings at an incredible strike rate of 228.95. While reaching these numbers, he also scored five fifties and a hundred.
Notably, two of his best innings came in the playoff stage. During the Eliminator against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, he missed out on the record for the fastest IPL fifty, finishing 97 (29). In the very next match against the Gujarat Titans, the situation called for a bit of composure with the team down to 9/2 within the first two overs.
He took his time to settle in before going berserk and finished with 96 off 47, showing the maturity in his batting. By the end of this knock, he had also gone past Chris Gayle in the most sixes in an IPL season, finishing with 72 of them.
Sooryavanshi in readiness for India call-up
Sooryavanshi shattered all the records he could in IPL 2026; however, the biggest reward for his talent is yet to come as the player now knocks on the doors of Ajit Agarkar and co. for an India debut.
He has already been called up for India A’s tour of Sri Lanka in mid-June, where they play a One Day tri-series against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A. But the BCCI is not looking to wait any longer to give him his break in the senior team as well.
Just days after the India A series, he is now in line to receive his maiden India call-up for the Ireland T20Is at the end of June. While the captaincy is likely to be handed over to Shreyas Iyer, the southpaw is set to become the youngest Indian to be selected in international cricket since Sachin Tendulkar.
Will Sooryavanshi break Sachin Tendulkar’s record?
In November 1989, Sachin Tendulkar made his India debut against Pakistan at the age of 16y 205d. Right now, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is 15y 69d and still has over a year to break this record and become the youngest male cricketer from India.
In all likelihood, Sooryavanshi could break the almost four-decade-old record held by Sachin Tendulkar.
