Shakib Al Hasan Issues Official Statement On Tamim Iqbal (Source: AFP)
Shakib Al Hasan, one of the greatest Bangladeshi cricketers, has shared his views on the possibility of ex-opener Tamim Iqbal becoming the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). This comes after an interim committee was appointed to run the day-to-day running of the board by the National Sports Council (NSC).
The National Sports Council (NSC) had dissolved the previous board headed by Aminul Islam Bulbul as they were embroiled in allegations of widespread irregularities during the October 6 elections last year.
Tamim Iqbal heads the current BCB interim committee
The National Sports Council (NSC) had then formed an 11-member committee and made former Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal its head. This board will take care of proceedings as they aim to complete the process before time, with the elections set to be held in the month of June.
Tamim has previously stated that he plans to run for president for a full four-year term.
“You would have to ask me personally (whether I will take part in the next election). I may choose to participate, or someone else may, or they may not. When a free and fair election is held, I will request everyone interested to participate,” said Tamim while addressing reporters on Tuesday.
Shakib Al Hasan lends support to Tamim Iqbal’s candidacy
Shakib Al Hasan, an all-rounder for Bangladesh, believes Tamim Iqbal will succeed as president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board if elected.
Shakib supported his former national teammate without hesitation, despite the fact that the two have had a tense relationship in recent years, as former BCB president Nazmul Hasan had previously disclosed when he stated they were not on talking terms.
“I would say that he (Tamim Iqbal) was not elected; he has been given the responsibility to organize the election. Hopefully, if he becomes president, I think he will have a long-term plan, and Bangladesh cricket will definitely benefit from him,” Shakib told reporters in Mumbai on the sidelines of the EU T20 Belgium 2026 jersey launch.

Tamim Iqbal is the highest run-getter for Bangladesh in international cricket and their only batter to score a century in all three formats. He played 70 Tests, scoring 5134 runs with 10 centuries and an average of 38.89.
In 243 ODIs, Iqbal made 8357 runs at an average of 36.65, with 14 centuries. He also made 1758 runs in 78 T20Is, with one century and a best score of 103*.
Shakib Al Hasan says the BCB's decision of not sending Bangladesh team to India was blunder
Shakib Al Hasan also revealed that he thinks that Bangladesh's decision to not play in the T20 World Cup 2026 was a huge blunder by the previous administration and government headed by Mohammad Yunus.
The Yunus-led government cited security concerns for the Bangladesh team in India, in the wake of protests against atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh. They requested the ICC shift their T20 World Cup matches to Sri Lanka, and when the ICC didn’t budge, Bangladesh refused to play in the tournament. They were promptly replaced by Scotland.
“I think it was a blunder from the government side that they took the decision not to participate in that World Cup. It was a big loss. We are a cricket-loving nation, and not taking part in a World Cup was a huge miss,” Shakib said.
However, Shakib saw a bright future for Bangladesh in international cricket in coming years.
