The Barbados Royals have gone into a massive rebranding in a recent development. After five years under that name, the franchise is going back under the Barbados Tridents umbrella.
The Royals Sports Group and the Government of Barbados jointly announced the relaunch as part of a sweeping "One Barbados" initiative.
Notably, it’s not a takeover since the Royals Sports Group is staying. But the pink-and-blue Royals branding is being replaced with national colours, and Barbados is reclaiming its franchise ahead of the island's 60th year of independence.
From Tridents to Royals and Back Again
The franchise was one of the original six teams when the Caribbean Premier League launched in 2013. From day one, they were a Barbados institution. They won the CPL title in 2014 under Kieron Pollard and again in 2019 under Jason Holder, defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors both times.
Then in 2021, the Royals Sports Group, the ownership group behind the IPL's Rajasthan Royals, acquired the franchise. The rebrand followed. Pink and blue came in, and the Tridents name went out. The franchise became the Barbados Royals, aligned visually and commercially with the broader Royals brand.
What the One Barbados Partnership Actually Is
The One Barbados initiative is a three-year partnership between the Government of Barbados and the Royals Sports Group, with a structure that has not been tried before in elite franchise cricket.
The Government of Barbados has agreed in principle to become a minority co-investor in the franchise, subject to relevant approvals.
That means a national government will hold a stake in a professional cricket franchise. The Royals Sports Group retains majority ownership and full control of day-to-day operations. Nothing changes on the management side but the government now has a formal stake in the team's future. Manoj Badale, Lead Owner of the Royals Sports Group, described it.
"One Barbados is a landmark partnership and, we believe, a first-of-its-kind public–private collaboration in elite franchise cricket. It reflects our long-term belief in Barbados, not only as a cricketing powerhouse, but as a nation with deep global relevance across sport, tourism, investment and innovation," Badale said.
The partnership is also designed to run beyond the CPL season, and the commitment is year-round.

Why Barbados Wanted the Name Back
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley was direct about what this relaunch represents for the country.
"As Barbados marks its 60th year of Independence, the One Barbados partnership encapsulates everything that we, as a young nation have accomplished thus far," she said.
"The return to the Barbados Tridents reflects our confidence, our pride and our ambition as a nation, as we begin to chart the path towards our next 60 years. Cricket has long been a core pillar of our national identity and self-determination," she added.
She also addressed what the franchise needs to become going forward, "We want to make sure that the Barbados Tridents is at the heart of our national story, inspiring our young people, strengthening our global presence, and demonstrating how sport can serve the wider national interest."
That is the political framing. But the cricket framing is just as clear. The Tridents name carries two CPL titles while the Royals name carries none.
What Stays, What Changes In The Rebranding
The new matchday jersey will feature Barbados national colours. The Tridents name and identity return fully with a redesigned logo accompanies the relaunch.
What does not change is the Royals Sports Group's connection to the colour pink. The identity, which originated through charitable work including cancer awareness and women's empowerment, will continue under the new name.
The relaunched Barbados Tridents will host a dedicated charity match during the CPL season, raising funds for Barbadian causes. The social impact programme continues; however, it will be under a different name and a different flag.
