Rohit Sharma, the Indian opener, is a veteran of 285 ODI matches, but the journey could be coming to an end next month, as the right-handed batter might not be in the 2027 World Cup scheme of things for the Indian selectors. Arguably one of the greatest ODI batters ever, the 39-year-old might be nearing the end of his illustrious career.

This is not an opinion, but if the latest reports are to be believed, then Rohit could be out of the ODI squad, with the legendary batter not considered for the World Cup that takes place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia next year.

End of the road for Rohit Sharma in India colours

Rohit made his ODI debut for India in 2007, and 19 years later, he could be on his way out as the selectors have reportedly decided to part ways with him. According to reports by Sports Tak, the upcoming England series could be his last for Team India, with India looking at other options to partner Shubman Gill at the top.

The video report mentioned that the team management was not too keen to include Rohit in the playing XI for the 3rd ODI against Afghanistan, and he was already informed about his ODI future.

The India vs Afghanistan ODIs was supposed to be his last outing in the Indian jersey, but for some reason, it didn’t happen as he was picked for the England ODIs as well.

Why the selectors are considering to snub Rohit from the ODIs

On the basis of form and run-scoring, Rohit cannot be dropped from the ODI scheme of things. However, there are other criteria that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is looking at. One of them is Rohit’s recent injury track record.

At 39, he isn’t getting any younger, and by the time the 2027 World Cup arrives, the right-handed batter would be 41. Also, in the IPL 2026, he sustained a hamstring injury, and even though he recovered, the batter never looked like one hundred percent fit.

Also, Rohit has a poor ODI record in South Africa, and that could be one of the main reasons why the management is not too keen to have him on board. He averages a mere 19.69 in South Africa, and this could be a major roadblock for the former India captain.

Should the BCCI selectors actually remove Rohit from ODIs?

What is the primary role of a batter in any cricketing format? It is to score truckloads of runs, and Rohit has been doing that consistently.

Since the start of 2025, the 39-year-old has accumulated 854 runs in 20 matches, with an average of 44, and a strike rate of 100. Under his guidance, India won the Champions Trophy, and he took the team to the 2023 World Cup final.

Also, he has scored runs in tricky conditions in recent years, and Team India certainly needs an experienced batter at the top to accompany Gill. He has scored runs in the last two World Cups, and the team could do well with his guidance.

Hence, the selectors should not drop Rohit Sharma, as long as he is scoring runs (which he is doing).
