Rohit Sharma will reportedly be making his return to domestic cricket later this year. The legendary opening batter has apparently informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his availability for Mumbai in the upcoming 2026-27 Vijay Hazare Trophy season in India.
It is worth noting that Sharma, who only plays ODI cricket for India at the moment, also played a handful of Vijay Hazare matches for the Mumbai cricket team last year during the 2025-26 edition of the tournament.
Rohit Sharma on track to play Vijay Hazare 2026-27: Report
As reported by Indian Express, Rohit Sharma has informed the MCA that he will be available to play 2026-27 Vijay Hazare Trophy matches later this year for the Mumbai cricket team.
In such a case, the cricketer will join the Mumbai team soon after the completion of India’s upcoming home ODI series against Sri Lanka. The three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka will be played between December 13 and December 19.
Meanwhile, Mumbai’s opening match of the 2026-27 Vijay Hazare Trophy will be played on December 14 against Services. Mumbai will also face Jammu and Kashmir, and Jharkhand cricket teams until the completion of India’s home series against Sri Lanka.
An MCA source close to the development said, “He has informed us that he will be playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and to consider him available after India’s three-ODI series against Sri Lanka at home. How many matches he will be available for, he will inform us later.”
With the opening week of the 2026-27 Vijay Hazare Trophy coinciding with India’s series against Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma can join the Mumbai squad at the earliest for their fourth match of the tournament, set to be played against Saurashtra on December 21.
Why playing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2026-27 is important for Rohit Sharma?
With Rohit Sharma entering the twilight of his career, he is certain to announce his retirement from international cricket after the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia next year.
Currently playing only ODI cricket for India, the former captain is scheduled to face New Zealand in a five-match away series before facing Sri Lanka in a three-match home series this December.
With India lined up to play only a handful of ODI games before the 2027 World Cup, it is imperative for Sharma to maximize all 50-overs opportunities and remain match-ready ahead of the marquee tournament.
