India batter Shreyas Iyer has etched his name in history books as the India captain has gone past Rohit Sharma to top the list for most runs by an Indian captain in a calendar year. The right-handed batter achieved the feat in his 1st year as India captain.
Interestingly, Iyer was roped in as India captain after the T20 World Cup in March. His first assignment was in June, and it took him just four months to shatter Rohit Sharma’s record.
Shreyas Iyer Scores Most Runs In A Calendar Year As India Captain
Shreyas got off to the worst possible start as an India captain with no wins in the first seven matches. However, he performed well as a batter. Notably, Shreyas has 657 runs to his name in 25 T20Is in the ongoing calendar year 2026. He went past Rohit’s record of 656 runs, which was set across 29 T20Is as India's captain in 2022.
- Shreyas Iyer - 657* (2026)
- Rohit Sharma - 656 (2022)
- Suryakumar Yadav - 484 (2026)
Babar Azam In Shreyas Iyer’s Sight
Shreyas Iyer has broken Rohit Sharma’s record, but the benchmark still remains Babar Azam. Notably, Babar holds the world record for the most runs by a T20I captain in a calendar year, having scored 939 runs in 29 matches as Pakistan's skipper in 2021.
Overall, Shreyas Iyer is 10th on the list. Following the New Zealand series, India only have the Sri Lanka T20I series at home in December, where he has the chance to rise a few more spots and try to shatter Babar’s record, which is a difficult task at the moment.
Shreyas Iyer In Stellar Form With Bat In 2026
As mentioned above, Shreyas Iyer has been in stellar form with the bat. The right-handed batter has 657 runs to his name, averaging 31.71. Notably, Iyer also brought up his maiden century in T20Is as a captain, which came against England.
Overall, Shreyas Iyer has 2 fifties and a solitary century to his name as India captain. Interestingly, he has better average as a captain than just playing as a player.
