The Proteas completed a 2-1 series victory after recovering from an opening-match defeat, winning the remaining two games convincingly. The result has brought an end to Australia's two-and-a-half-year stay at the top of the rankings, with South Africa now leading the table by two rating points.
South Africa Move To The Top Of ICC Test Team Rankings
The third Test between Australia and South Africa proved to be the deciding match in the race for the top spot. Having lost the first Test by 214 runs in Durban, the hosts bounced back strongly in Gqeberha, registering an innings and 31-run victory.
In the 3rd Test, South Africa set Australia a target of 288 runs in the fourth innings after posting 329 and 387 in their two innings. However, the Australian batting line-up could manage only 111 runs before being bowled out, handing the Proteas a 176-run victory.
Simon Harmer played a decisive role with a career-best six-wicket haul of 6/16, while Kagiso Rabada also made an impact with three wickets. Rabada reached the milestone of 350 Test wickets during the match.
The series victory has also changed the standings at the top of the ICC Men's Test Team Rankings. South Africa have climbed to first place with 124 rating points, moving ahead of Australia, who now occupy second position with 122 points.

The achievement is particularly significant for South Africa, who have returned to the top of the Test rankings for the first time since January 2016.
How Did Australia Dominate The ICC Test Team Rankings For Two-And-A-Half Years?
Australia's long stay at the top was built on consistent results across different conditions and major Test campaigns. One of the major factors behind Australia's position was its success in important series. The team won the 2021-23 World Test Championship and continued to collect valuable results in the following cycle.
Although Australia lost the 2025-27 WTC Final against South Africa, they responded with a 3-0 series whitewash in the West Indies. They also retained the Ashes after defeating England 4-1, adding another significant result to their record.
Their success was also supported by a settled group of experienced players. Cummins led a formidable pace attack featuring Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, while the batting unit provided the stability required to compete in both home and overseas conditions.
However, their latest tour of South Africa exposed the difficulty of holding that position indefinitely. They were bowled out for 99 in the second Test before suffering another collapse in the final innings at Newlands.
