Few debates in cricket spark as much intrigue as picking an all-time IPL XI, a tournament that has showcased some of the finest T20 stars in the past two decades. Having carved out a stellar IPL legacy of his own, England great Jos Buttler recently joined Stuart Broad on a podcast and revealed his ultimate IPL lineup.
Few of Buttler’s notable selections, as well as exclusions, are bound to raise eyebrows. For instance, Mumbai Indians icon and five-time IPL winning skipper Rohit Sharma failed to make it to the Englishman’s list.
Moreover, the former England captain picked as many as seven overseas stars and four Indian cricketers in his ultimate IPL XI, even though the composition is generally the other way around in the tournament.
Jos Buttler picks RCB-heavy top four
While speaking with ex-England teammate Stuart Broad on ‘For The Love Of Cricket’ podcast, Jos Buttler picked his “Dream IPL XI”. The former English skipper and current Gujarat Titans member named an RCB-heavy top four, naming Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle as his openers.

Apart from Gayle, the cricketer picked another RCB Hall of Famer in the form of AB de Villiers, albeit as his number four batter. Former CSK batter and ‘Mr. IPL’ himself, Suresh Raina was placed at number three by the English great.
Not Rohit Sharma, but MS Dhoni leads West Indies-heavy Buttler XI
Jos Buttler further picked legendary West Indies all-rounders and multi-IPL winners Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell as his number five and number six batters. The Titans cricketer named CSK icon MS Dhoni as his captain over fellow five-time IPL winning skipper Rohit Sharma.
Spin masters Rashid Khan and Sunil Narine, who are also known for their hard-hitting dexterity with the bat, found number eight and nine positions on the cricketer’s batting order. Mumbai Indians’ champion fast bowling duo of Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah will helm Buttler’s pace attack, as per the Englishman himself.
Jos Buttler names his Dream IPL XI:
Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, Suresh Raina, AB De Villiers, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Rashid Khan, Sunil Narine, Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah.
Rohit Sharma snub headlines Buttler’s dream IPL XI
Rohit Sharma, a six-time IPL winner including five as captain, surprisingly found no place in Buttler’s Dream XI as the former England skipper decided to go with fellow multi-IPL winner MS Dhoni as his captain.
While Dhoni’s inclusion as captain may not come as a major surprise, Rohit Sharma’s omission is certain to divide opinion among fans given his unparalleled success with Mumbai Indians.
Jos Buttler excludes himself
Despite being widely regarded as one of the most destructive overseas batters in IPL history, Jos Buttler humbly left himself out of the lineup, opting instead for a star-studded XI packed with some of the league’s most iconic names.
The legendary English batter is the fifth highest run-maker in the history of the tournament among all overseas players, with 4,390 runs to his name from 127 innings at an average of nearly 40. He is also the second highest century-maker overall in IPL history, with his seven hundreds only falling behind Virat Kohli’s eight.
As of now, the 35-year-old is playing his second successive season for the Gujarat Titans in the ongoing IPL 2026 in India.
