Rajasthan Royals might have become the 1st team to beat Punjab Kings in IPL 2026. However, that big of an event certainly seem to be the biggest news of the night. RR Captain Riyan Parag's Vaping Video has taken away all the spotlight from the PBKS vs RR Mullanpur spectacle.

Parag, who has been given RR's reins for the 1st time as a full-time captain seems to have lost the plot entirely despite his team performing decently well in IPL 2026. Known for his antics and irresponsible behaviour online, Riyan Parag is now in the midst of a very big controversy.

Rajasthan Royals Puncture Punjab Kings' Winning Chariot

Punjab Kings had been invincibles since the start of IPL 2026. Prior to the PBKS vs RR game, they had played a total of 7 matches and they did not lose even once, taking their points tally to 13 points in the IPL Points Table.

Only 1 of their 7 games had been washed out due to rain which took place at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata vs KKR. But Rajasthan Royals came as a massive surprise for the hosts at Mullanpur. Having won the toss, RR Captain, Riyan Parag elected to field first.

Punjab openers, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh got their team to a flying start before Jofra Archer came and stung Priyansh with his pace. Eventually, Priyansh departed and Prabhsimran carried on his merry ways along with Cooper Connolly.

Although Prabhsimran Singh wasn't at his fluent best, a quickfire knock from Connolly made sure that the Indian youngster spent some time out in the middle and reached another half-century.

Both Cooper Connolly and Prabhsimran Singh departed to young Yash Raj Punja and Shreyas Iyer and Marcus Stoinis started steading the ship. However, apart Stoinis and Connolly, no other Punjab Kings batter looked at his fluent best.

As things stood at the halfway mark, Punjab Kings finished at a strong score of 222 runs for the loss of 4 wickets with a quick fire finishing knock of 62 runs in 22 balls by Marcus Stoinis.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi took off, before Shubham Dubey, Donovan Ferriera Fireworks

Young Indian opener, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was again at his brilliant best as he and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave a flying start to the Rajasthan Royals in the chase. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashed 43 runs off just 16 balls whereas Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 51 runs off 27 balls.

After their dismissals, Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag couldn't contribute much with the bat. Parag's season with the bat and the ball has been very disappointing but his teammates have provided him the cushion to fall.

After Riyan Parag departed, it was showtime for Shubham Dubey and Donovan Ferreira who took the Punjab Kings bowlers to the cleaners and smashed them all around the park. Through their efforts, it never felt that RR was out of the chase.

Riyan Parag Vaping Video storms the internet

Although Ferreira and Shubham Dubey kept things under control, Riyan seemed troubled with his performance and also a bit anxious of whether Rajasthan would be able to close the match after having already lost a couple of close encounters in IPL 2026.

During the 16th over, as the cameras turned towards Rajasthan Royals' dressing room, Riyan Parag was seen vaping. Vape is an E-Cigarette which is banned in India and is strictly prohibited in the PMOA (Players and Match Officials Area) set by the BCCI.

As soon as the video surfaced, it spread like wildfire on social media with fans smashing the Rajasthan Royals captain for setting wrong standards through the platform given to him.

Although RR managed to beat Punjab, Riyan Parag's vaping video stole the entire spotlight and has led fans to wondering what disciplinary and legal actions can be taken against the Rajasthan Royals' captain for this unwarranted act.

Can Riyan Parag be jailed for vaping in IPL?

As far as the disciplinary actions are concerned, it remains to be seen what are the actions that the BCCI will take against Riyan Parag in his vaping case. As far as the legal actions are concerned, we at CREX, can confirm that Riyan Parag might be jailed as per the Indian law.

Vaping is strictly illegal in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (PECA), 2019, which prohibits the production, manufacture, import, export, transport, sale, distribution, storage, and advertisement of e-cigarettes. Violations can result in imprisonment up to one year and/or fines up to ₹1 lakh, with stricter penalties for repeat offences.

Riyan Parag's vaping offence false under the following legal consequences in India:

  • Production & Sale Ban: All forms of e-cigarettes, including heat-not-burn products and vape pens, are strictly banned in terms of production, sale, and distribution.
  • Storage Penalty: Storing vaping products can attract penalties, with fines going up to ₹50,000 or even imprisonment for up to six months.
  • Travel Restriction: Carrying, importing, or bringing vapes into India from abroad is not allowed. Such items are liable to be confiscated at airports.
  • Authority to Act: Police officers of the rank of Sub-Inspector or above have the authority to conduct searches and seize these products without requiring a warrant.
  • Subsequent Offenses: In case of repeated violations, the punishment becomes more severe, with imprisonment of up to three years and fines that can extend to ₹5 lakh.
  • Possession Uncertainty: While the law mainly targets trade and storage, there is still some ambiguity around personal possession. In certain situations, even carrying a vape could lead to penalties depending on interpretation.

Although BCCI has not made a formal announcement, reports claim that Riyan Parag seems to have found him in a lot of trouble after the recent muck up.

A Times of India report stated quoting industry sources, "Unlike smoking a cigarette, you don't know what you are inhaling when it comes to vaping. There is a reason why it is banned in the country and one has no clue about the ingredients which go inside it and whether it meets the safety guidelines.

"Especially for an elite athlete. The franchise and the captain will need to keep their reasons ready because the BCCI is unlikely to come down soft on an incident like this," the source in the report further stated.

High Time Rajasthan Royals get their act back on track

Rajasthan Royals have been one of the oldest teams in the history of the IPL. The team has existed since the inception of the tournament in 2008 and were also the inaugural champions of the Indian Premier League under the leadership of Shane Warne.

Although the franchise has tasted silverware, they have had a fair share in the biggest controversies in the IPL. The most infamous incident was the 2013 IPL Match Fixing scandal for which, they along with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were banned for 2 seasons in IPL 2016 and IPL 2017.

Then in IPL 2026 itself, RR's Team Manager, Romi Bhinder was caught using a smartphone in the PMOA area sitiing alongside Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Romi Bhinder was fined by BCCI for a sum ₹1 Lakh for violating the BCCI protocols. He was warned to take note of his behaviour going forward.

Now, Riyan Parag's vape has brought in a lot of smoke that will take time to clear RR's image. The visual of an IPL Team Captain smoking on LIVE TV in front of millions might hurt BCCI's policy of setting global standards for the Indian Premier League.

Post the COVID era, Rajasthan Royals have been the talent producing machine for Indian cricket ecosystem. Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and the latest global sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, have all been scouted and worked with by the RR franchise.

However, that doesn't give the franchise the right to violate the norms and customaries set by the Indian Cricket Board. With new owners onboard, and some brave calls before the season, Rajasthan Royals would have wanted to keep the noise around the cricket they play.

However, that hasn't been the case in IPL 2026 and the franchise's reputation has taken a hit for sure. In the coming days, it will be interesting to see how BCCI deals with the incumbent situation, but the franchises can be a lot more responsible in setting the standards.
